Free Tax Preparations and Free E-filing in Tulsa, Oklahoma

Beverly Bright
Free tax preparations for federal and state taxes and free E-filing will be available to Tulsa County residents, once again, by CAP (Community Action Project). The free tax preparation and filing program is available to Tulsa County families from January through April that earn $50,000 or less and individuals who earn $40,000 or less. Anyone laid-off from a job in the past year also can use the free program.

Free Tax Benefits

Free tax preparation services eliminate the additional expense of commercial tax prep expenses for low-income families. Clients can avoid the high interest loans that some commercial tax preparers charge for 'refund anticipation loans'. Tax preparation is done by IRS-trained and certified preparers. Simple federal and state tax forms are prepared.

Maximizing Refunds and Direct Deposits

Tax preparers are trained to help in maximizing refunds by filing for all appropriate tax credits, such as EITC and Child Tax Credit. Returns are filed electronically for free to speed receipts of earned refunds. Clients may also choose to have refunds deposited directly into their bank account.

Free Tax Preparation Goal

CAP's free tax preparation goal is to decrease poverty and to expand economic independence in Tulsa by helping low and moderate-income working people. Use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for those eligible, lifts more children out of poverty than all other means-tested government programs combined. Linda Brock, CAP's communications director reported that in 2009, CAP prepared more than 17,000 returns and helped clients get $29 million in refunds.
