Free Therapy and Counseling for Students at Colleges and Universities

As a college student, you probably pay many fees for services you'll never use. Some students don't even know services are offered on campus. While services vary by which university you are attending, most universities now offer counseling services to their students. Depression is on the rise in college students and schools are stepping up to do something about it.

At the university I attend there is a counseling and psychological services department. Flyers throughout the campus make the location of this office known to students needing help. When you go into the office, it is just like a regular psychologist's office. The setting is nice and peaceful with comfy chairs and even a waterfall. The friendly receptionist greets you and will answer questions about the services offered there. The first step if you are interested in obtaining counseling services, is to set up an intake appointment. At the intake appointment you will be asked to fill out a form with a lot of questions about yourself. After that, you will see a psychologist and be further questioned. Depending on the school you attend and how packed their service is, after that you may unfortunately end up waiting a few weeks until they have room to fit you in. Once you are in the program however, you will have weekly appointments unless they determine you need to be seen more often. Our program only allows a student to stay in therapy for 10 weeks out of each school year. However, they do make exceptions if you need to be seen for a longer period of time. They will also refer you to an outside source for help if you can afford it once your therapy sessions on campus have ended. The whole program is very professional and offers a lot of help to students.

If you are a college student and you are going through a tough time, check out the counseling services available at your campus. Even if you don't wish to go into therapy, the counseling and psychological services department can be of help to you. They have many flyers available with information on various topics from eating disorders to problems with procrastination. Sometimes colleges also have a smaller department for answering general health questions and they may be able to help you as well with problems not requiring a psychologist. When you are struggling with other problems, it can be very difficult to concentrate on your school work as well. Many students would never be able to go to therapy if it weren't offered on campus. Counseling and psychological services on campus help to offer college students help they may not have been able to obtain otherwise and benefit the entire college community.
