David Christopher
Short on cash this summer and stuck in Brooklyn? Afraid you will be bored out of your mind without much spending money? Relax. There are a lot of free things to do in Brooklyn.
  • Enjoy the view of the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, a long strip that overlooks the Brooklyn Queens expressway and faces not just the East River, but across the water, Lower Manhattan as well. This beautiful New York City landmark has been featured in Woody Allen's Annie Hall and Norman Jewison's Moonstruck, and offers spectacular, clear, and unobstructed views of the New York skyline. It is a peaceful, clean, safe, and even romantic place, which has some of the best views in the city.
  • Attend one of the free upcoming hip-hop concerts in Brooklyn's parks. Upcoming performers include legendary acts like Smif N Wessun, Black Moon, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Wayne Wonder and Frankie Negron, among others. Click here for more information.
  • Come to the 2009 BAM Rhythm & Blues Festival in Downtown Brooklyn, every Thursday from 12 until 2:00 p.m. Upcoming performers include the legendary South African acapella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, July 30, and award-winning Malian singer and guitarist Rokia Traore, August 6 until August 6th. • Every Friday, The Moxie Spot, a restaurant on Atlantic Avenue, holds free screenings of family friendly movies starting at 6:15. They also have other family-friendly activities throughout the week - click here to view them.

Good info. I like the idea of restaurants with free movie viewings as well as free concerts.

Brooklyn sounds a lot like Madison, with all its free activities and markets.
