Free Things to Do in Brooklyn, NY

Traveling to New York City can be expensive. However there are tons of cheap and free attractions for you to visit in New York City. Many visitors to New York City tend to overlook the outer boroughs such as Brooklyn. That is a big mistake since there's so much to do and see in Brooklyn, and many attractions are free. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, I just can't seem to stay away. Although I now live in New Jersey, somehow, I find myself in Brooklyn at least once a week. In this article, I will highlight five of my favorite free things to do in Brooklyn.

First up is the Discover Tour at Prospect Park. This 526 acre park is a very popular Brooklyn attraction and features a 90 acre sprawling meadow. Every Saturday and Sunday, the park offers a free walking tour guided by a naturalist. While on this walking tour you will learn about the parks history and meet many different bird species and creatures of all kinds.

Next up is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden was founded in 1910. It is a 52 acres oasis of flowers, landscaped lawns, trees, and more, located near Prospect Park. The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens offers free admission to children under 12 and school groups year round. Senior citizens get free admission on Fridays. Admission is free for the general public all day on Tuesdays and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Next on the list is First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The Brooklyn Museum of Art is one of the largest museums in the United States. Its collection includes over 1.5 million objects and features a very impressive collection of Egyptian art and antiquities. On the First Saturday of every month, the Brooklyn Museum offers free admission between the hours of 5 - 11 pm and offers great cultural entertainment such as film screenings, music concerts, performances and dancing. Because this is a popular event, it's best to get there early!

Next up is Kayaking in Red Hook. The Red Hook Boaters group offers free walk up kayaking every Sunday until mid-September and every Thursday until mid -august. They provide all o the equipment including the kayak and a life jacket. Their only requests are that you abide by their safety rules, and join them in their beach cleanup efforts either before or after your kayaking trip.

Last up on my list of free things to do in Brooklyn is walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge is among one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. A stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge is a must-do when you are in New York. While on the Bridge, you will have a spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline. There is also a collection of historic plaques and signs as you make your way across the bridge which will provide you with the bridge's history and help to provide some insight into how the bridge was built.
