Free Things to Do in Chicago

The Windy City offers a variety of free things to do in its many neighborhoods. Whether a garden, park, museum or other attraction, a trip to Chicago can be affordable for a couple, family or even singles. Visit one of these many free attractions during your next trip to Chicago.

Chicago Cultural Center

Located at 78 E. Washington Street, the Chicago Cultural Center is a free attraction. This has been named one of the nicest and comprehensive free art showcases in the country. The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs also provides several different exhibitions and programs throughout the year, usually free. The Randolph Cafe provides coffee, tea, juices and other snacks for visitors.

Millennium Park

Millennium Park is found at 103 N. Michigan Avenue and is located adjacent to Grant Park. Admission is free. With breathtaking gardens and other art exhibits scattered across its acreage, Millennium Park has become one of the largest millennium projects found worldwide.

Buckingham Fountain

Found at Congress Parkway & Columbus Drive, the Buckingham Fountain is another fun and free Chicagoland attraction. The fountain showcases four separate seahorses representing each of the four states that touch Lake Michigan. These states are Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois. The fountain operates from April to November 1. The jets spray water nearly 150 feet in the air. A lights and music show is experienced by visitors who come to the fountain at night. The fountain can hold nearly 1.5 million gallons of water.

Museum of Contemporary Photography

Located at Columbia College Chicago's main building (600 S. Michigan Avenue), the Museum of Contemporary Photography is another free attraction found in Chicago. This artistic experience provides some of the most stimulating photographs of modern day times. The exhibit provides nearly 6,000 photographs to view as well as other related images. The collection is focused on artistic expression as well as the influence photography as on science and technology.
