Free Things to Do in Chicago

Chicago is a beautiful city. It is one of my favorites to visit because of its atmosphere and beauty. One of the greatest things about it is that you can see a lot of things for free. A lot of these things are right out in the open for you to see, and some require a bit more investigation and planning. But however you do it, here are five things you shouldn't miss that are free in Chicago.

Millennium Park

No visit to Chicago could be complete without a trip to Millennium Park. There are sculptures everywhere, including the infamous Bean. At the Bean you can take a picture of yourself reflecting off of the steel of the Bean. It's an interesting experience. But make sure you see the other sculptures as well, because they are also beautiful works of art. There is also a fountain for children to play in during the summer.

The Field Museum

Normally, the Field Museum charges admission. You can, however, get in for free the second Monday of every month. If you can take advantage of that deal, I definitely would. The Field Museum is a beautiful building filled with incredible objects. Make sure you see Lucy, the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Lions of Tsavo. Two of my favorite exhibits.

Navy Pier

Navy Pier is an icon of Chicago. You can see the famous Ferris Wheel from all over the city. There are museums, shows, and some of them are free. The views of the harbor are free, and definitely worth taking a look at. While the Ferris Wheel will cost you $6 for a ride, it's worth it if you want to see the whole pier.

Art Institute of Chicago

This is also someplace that normally charges admission, however, you can get in for free on Thursdays after 5:00 p.m. Here you can see examples of African Art, and Contemporary Art. It's definitely worth a look.

Festivals and Other Activities

There are usually a lot of free festivals in the summer. On my last trip to Chicago, there was a free jazz festival that was happening right outside our window. It was one of many. Most hotels are well versed in these, so ask around. If that doesn't work for you, there are often free classes in Millennium Park, such as free yoga and pilates. It may take a little digging, but there are plenty of free and fun things to do in the Windy City.
