Next time you plan an outing for your family, consider the Children's Museum, Discovery Green, or Miller Outdoor Theatre. The Houston Children's Museum is a wonderful place to take the kids. The museum is full of interactive exhibits that are educational and fun. The kids can have a ball climbing a 35 foot tower in the PowerPlay exhibit or build and launch a rocket in Invention Convention.
In Moneyville, kids can learn about business and managing finances. And, with family night every Thursday from 5-8 pm is free of charge. Get there early to avoid waiting in line.
Visit Discovery Green in downtown Houston. This 12-acre park offers many activities that the family can enjoy for free including a children's playground, children's activities and jogging trails. On a hot day, you can cool off in the park's interactive water features. There are also open lawns on which you can run and play or just relax and enjoy the day.
If you are feeling especially active, join in a free Zumba class offered on Thursdays. Another fantastic attraction is Miller Outdoor Theatre. Here you can enjoy a variety of professional entertainment ranging from ballet to musical theatre. Listen to music of all kinds including jazz, classical, ethnic, and dance. You can catch a classic film or one of Shakespeare's plays. Best of all, all performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre are family-friendly and free of charge. Uncovered seating is first come, first serve. Be sure to bring a blanket or chairs for seating. Covered seating is also available free of charge. However, you must request these tickets in advance.
With all that Houston has to offer, you are sure to find something fun for you and the entire family. These are just a few of the free and family-friendly destinations to visit in the Houston area. If you are coming from out of town, be mindful of the weather and outdoor attractions. Summers can get pretty hot so be sure to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
