Free Things to Do in Indianapolis Indiana

Tamara Jern
With money being so tight over the last year, we're all looking for free or low-cost things to do. Here in Indianapolis there's plenty to see and do that won't leave a hole in your wallet or your budget..

The Canal, at over 150 years old, is an 3 mile stretch of waterway lined with shops, artwork, and gondola rides. Adjacent to the Canal is White River State Park, The Eiteljorg Museum, The Indiana State Museum, the Indiana Historical Society, the Indianapolis Zoo, Victory Field, Military Park, and the NCAA Hall of Champions. With so much to do close to this gorgeous stretch of waterway, its an easy choice for something utterly free to do when you're downtown.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument stands at the center of Indianapolis on Monument Circle. Another one of our historic monuments, it was built in 1902 as a tribute to Hoosier soldiers who had served in the Civil War. With an observation room at the top and a Civil War Museum underneath, its an easy way to while away the hours. In the winter, it transforms into the World's Largest Christmas tree with hundreds of Christmas lights strung from its peak to the base. The annual lighting ceremony is marked with music and performances from bands and organizations from across the city and state.

Many seem to overlook the library system even in these troubled times. However, the library is overflowing with free classes, demonstrations, and literacy oriented events. A visit over to the Events and Classes page on the IMCPL website reveals a plethora of things to do that won't break the bank.

For the art lovers, we have the Indiana Museum of Art. Not only is the museum itself free but it also is host to the Lilly House and has over 152 acres of gardens and grounds to explore from dawn til dusk. Like the library, the IMA offers classes, demonstrations, and events that cost little to nothing to attend.

There's nothing like going to the park to play, no matter the time of year. With over 200 parks, Indy Parks has something for everyone. From regional parks that showcase the beauty of native Indiana wilderness to dozens of mini parks that serve the neighborhoods they inhabit, there is a park within reach no matter where you live.
