When you visit the Outer Banks you will want to be sure to visit the light Houses, These are free and these are historical sites that you should take photos of your families while you are there. There are usually places that you can visit around each of the light houses that you can walk trails and see the ocean. There are also picnic tables at some of them. A few of the light houses you will be able to walk to the top, usually this is for a small fee but the view is awesome.
Ride a free Ferry. There are ferries on the outer banks that will bring you to the mainland. You can ride a few of these for free. When you get to the main land you will have your vehicle and will be able to visit some sites, the rides are not that long and the kids will love it.
Visit Manteo and the Lost Colony. You can walk the paths and imagine what it would have been like for Virginia Dare and everyone that suddenly vanished without a trace many, many years ago. This is nice and shady and is a great walk. There are many squirrels that you will be seeing, and there are many unique shaped trees that you will want to take pictures at. While you're at the Lost Colony you will want to also take a tour of Fort Raleigh and learn some about the Civil War Fort. You will be able to see the water from there and it's a great way to spend some hours.
For entertainment for the kids while riding to your destination in the vehicle have your children count the horses on the side of the roads. These horses are many places and in front of many businesses. There are also huge over sized chairs that they can spot, and Stop by the Hammock Place for the huge hammock where if you ask inside they will usually let you get a picture in the hammock. The Hammock is big enough to fit several families.
There are many places that you visit and many things that you can do for free in the Outer Banks. Be sure that you grab a local paper and find out what is going on while you are visiting. There are different activates that you can do at different times of the year.
