Free Things to Do in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania This Summer

Summer activities can be expensive, but you don't have to spend a dime to have a great time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this summer. Every summer, Pittsburgh offers up free activities for locals and visitors. Check out some of these favorite free summer activities.

Free Festivals

Every summer Pittsburgh's independent radio station, WYEP, hosts a free summer music festival in Oakland. Take advantage of free activities all day in Schenley Plaza. This event features free live music, a craft marketplace, and various activities for children.

Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Arts Festival is another free activity that's not to be missed. For two weeks in the summer, there's free live music, free film, free dance performances and much, much, more. Explore the local galleries, visit and shop the artist marketplace, eat some yummy festival food, and walk around Point State Park. There's truly something for everyone here.

Free Movies

Cinema in The Park is a popular free summer activity in Pittsburgh. At dusk (usually around 9pm), Pittsburgh's favorite parks transform into outdoor movie theaters. Participating parks include Schenley, East Liberty, West End/Elliott Overlook, Brookline Memorial Park, Arsenal, Grandview Park, and Riverview Park. Pack a blanket and enjoy a free, family-friendly movie under the stars.

Free Classical Music

On summer Sundays, The Bach, Beethoven and Brunch Classical Music Series, offers free classical music in Mellon Park. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy brunch on the lawn while you listen to some of Pittsburgh's most talented musicians. During intermission, there's a "Best Brunch" competition. So, if your food is fancy or original, you may walk away with a few prizes.

Free Salsa Lessons

The only thing that can make summer in the city even hotter, is Salsa dancing. Seviche, a downtown tapas bar, offers free salsa lessons every Monday night at 9:00pm. These lessons cater to beginners, so don't worry if you've never danced before. Grab a partner and dance the night away -for free!
