Free Things to Do in Toledo, Ohio

Laura Blair
Toledo may not be the city that never sleeps, but there are plenty of things to do every day. Summer especially brings many events and activities which just happen to be free.

Farmers markets are in full swing in the summer, and Toledo has several. The Toledo Farmer's Market downtown location in the Warehouse District is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. They also hold markets at the Shops at Fallen Timbers on Tuesdays and at Westgate Village Shopping Center on Wednesdays, both from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Perrysburg Farmer's Market is on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Louisiana Avenue.

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo is one sponsor of Arts Gone Wild, a free showcase of Toledo visual and performing arts at the Toledo Botanical Gardens on August 7 and 8. However, several art galleries in the downtown participate in the Third Thursday Art Walk, where they open for tours. The walk centers on the warehouse district near Fifth Third Field, and while it is not a guided walk, information on participating galleries and artists is on the Arts Commission website.

The University of Toledo Urban Affairs Center, in partnership with the Toledo Lucas County Library, offers guided tours of architecture and history on Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. in their Discover Downtown Toledo Walking Tours. Each week highlights a different section of downtown.

The library also has adult book discussion groups. The discussions are one book per meeting, and the majority don't require a reservation, although patrons are asked to have read the book first.

The Toledo Area Metroparks are always free, and feature hiking and biking trails for all fitness levels. Other tourist attractions that are free are the Toledo Zoo and the Toledo Museum of Art and Glass Pavilion. The zoo is free to Lucas County residents from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays, although they still charge $6 per car to park. At the museum, parking costs $5 for non-members and admission to the collection are always free, and the It's Friday program features extended hours with live music, tours, and demonstrations. Free parking is available on the street.

National Amusements, which operates several theatres in the Toledo area, has a Bookworm Wednesday promotion. Children can catch a free showing of a selected children's movie on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. just by completing a book report and bringing it to the ticket counter. The accompanying adult also gets in free.

Oh, how I miss the Metroparks! I have to go hiking every time I come home, because they are so much better than anything I have yet found out here! Another good one, Laura! :-)
