Free Things to Do in Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver, British Columbia, located on the West Coast of Canada, is sometimes referred to as the Hollywood of the north due to the many celebrity sightings and film or TV shows shot there. While celebrity sighting are certainly one free thing you can do while in Vancouver there are plenty of other indoor and outdoor activities that you can do, absolutely free of charge!

Tennis

Free access to over 183 tennis courts, located in 43 of the city's public parks, allow anyone to play for free and lessons are available year round. Courts are assigned or used on a first come, first serve basis with a 30 minute limit, if there are others waiting to play. All players must wear rubber soled shoes to protect the court.

Granville Island

Granville Island is an artistic community, located in the middle of Vancouver, and attracts over 10.5 million people each year. You can visit local artisan shops, watch a glass blowing demonstration or even a painter or sculptor. The Island has a public market, open seven days a week, which is popular. The market sells everything from fruit, fresh fish, and crafts, while local buskers provide entertainment. There are musicians of all types playing in open courtyards, at any time of the day, everything from singers to violin and saxophone players. In the summer, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival is held on island, while during the winter, Winterruption, a three day arts and culture festival is held here.

Museums

There are several museums in Vancouver that are free of charge. The British Columbia Golf Museum and Hall of Fame showcases exhibits on the origin of golf, golf collecting, and the world's best golfers. Other exhibits, relating to golf are also on display such as the architecture and design of the fields, landscaping, and different types of golf clubs. Another free museum is the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre. Located in North Vancouver, the museum has hands on displays, puzzles, a puppet theatre, and outdoor nature programs in the summer for children and adults. Topics such an environmental concerns, rainforest plants and food chains are discussed through exhibits, films and informational lectures.
