Veterans Day is approaching: are you ready?

As busy as this time of year is, let's not have our Halloween-candy hangovers lead us directly into our Thanksgiving-turkey comas. November 11 is a perfect time to teach children about the great sacrifices made that give us the liberties we so freely enjoy. Here are a handful of relevant and free resources to make your teaching moment engaging and effective.

Free Veterans Day Printable Activities from About.com

Veterans Day Free Printable Word Search. With words like soldiers, peace, armistice, and veterans, this patriotic puzzle is perfect for kids looking to celebrate the great national holiday.

Veterans Day Free Printable Crossword Puzzle. Using the same basic words as the word search above, this crossword puzzle acts as another great resource for instilling the importance of patriotism.

Free Veterans Day Vocabulary Printout. This vocabulary sheet has ten Veterans Day definitions listed and a word bank with corresponding choices to choose from.

Free Veterans Day Challenge Quiz. This ten-question, multiple-choice quiz can act as a great teaching tool to naturally bring up the important related topics of war, November 11, armistice, soldiers, and so on.

Veterans Day Draw & Write Free Template. This simple template provides a spot for drawing a picture and a spot for writing a few thoughts under the caption "Veterans Day." History of Veterans Day from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs

Brief Printable History. Skip Wikipedia this time around and print out the history of Veterans Day from the Department of Veterans Affairs itself. Here at this government-operated site you can also find information on the National Veterans Day Ceremony, which takes place inside the Memorial Amphitheater of the Arlington National Cemetery, as well as information on other regional observances held throughout the country to honor America's great soldiers of past and present.

Side Note: Obviously, many of these patriotic resources can be used throughout the year for everyday celebrations as well as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and other national holidays. Scouts and Cub Scouts might also value the enclosed activities in learning about American history.
