Free Video Game Music Remixes

Ricky Coulter
Isn't the internet great? Online communities forged on common goals, hobbies, or interests, generating all sorts of interesting content for the perusal of all. Just about all forms of media are provided for on the internet, many for free. With all of the controversy surrounding online music downloads, piracy, and organizations such as the RIAA, it's easy to believe that any music provided for free online is illegal to download. Not so. Among the many types of music that are perfectly legitimate to download for free, video game remixes are a popular pastime among old-school gamers. Probably the largest, most diverse, and certainly the most impressive portal for free video game remixes would have to be OverClocked ReMix, the Unofficial Game Music Arrangement Community(www.ocremix.org).

OC Remix provides music that suits pretty much all gamers. The beauty of game remixes is that you get to listen to familiar tunes in a fresh, new way. Have a favorite Sonic The Hedgehog level tune? Chances are good that it's been remixed at least once, and likely several times in a variety of styles. Speaking of Sonic, one of my personal favorite remixes available on OC Remix is called Sonik Metro(http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01327/), composed by a musician named analoq(http://www.ocremix.org/remixer/analoq/). It's a rocking tune that really brings me back to those good old days, back when the Genesis was fighting for dominance in the gaming industry.

Another very interesting feature of OC Remix has to be the community-created Album Projects. Albums are essentially an album's worth of music dedicated to a particular game, with music created by many different musicians in the OC Remix community. Probably the most notable of these OC Remix Albums would have to be Chrono Symphonic(http://chrono.ocremix.org/), or perhaps The Dark Side of Phobos(http://doom.ocremix.org/). These are entire albums, freely available for download, and they also include a variety of album art. This means you could download a game remix album, burn it to a cdr, print out the album art, and voila: you now have a professional album full of free music.

Did I mention the community aspect of OC Remix? Imagine a community full of video game enthusiasts, many of whom enjoy composing music or creating tributes to video games in a variety of ways. OC Remix's community is full of gamers, all chatting up their favorite games and generally enjoying video games with their friends. Not only are there message forums for conversing with fellow gamers, but OC Remix also has it's own IRC channel. That means you can chat in realtime with your friends. It's an amazing prospect.

I am not affiliated with OC Remix, believe it or not. I'm just a huge fan of the community and the awesome tunes. Did I mention all this is free? Yeah, so, get over to OCRemix.org and join the fun, and get to downloading those free tracks!

If you like Overclocked, I would encourage you to check out remixSite (http://www.remixsite.org/). remixSite differs from Overclocked in that visitors rate the songs, where Overclocked only posts songs after they are reviewed by a judging panel.
