Free Websites for Ebooks

Downloading new ebooks is usually illegal but many classics and older works can be downloaded free of charge now that there copyrights have expired. These can be great resources for essays or homework assignments. I have compiled a list of several of the sites that are both reputable and can be used to download free ebooks. Remember to always check for copyrights on works regardless of the website unless it is a very old work where the author could not possibly still have a copyright.

Project Gutenburg is an organization that claims to be the largest collection of free ebooks. The site often offers multiple versions or different file types and is completely legal though you may not use the books for profit and should still check for copyrights. Project Gutenberg states there are over thirty two thousand ebooks on their site.

Planet Ebook also offers many works of classic fiction and the site verifies that you may use their works for schooling and share them however this site also forbids using their ebooks for profit. The site currently offers over eighty works.

Literature.org offers many classic English works and has many unabridged works. The site is fairly simple but has a fairly extensive library. Literature.org say all their works on here are in the public domain so you will not have copyright problems with them.

Public domain works is not limited to ebooks but is currently focused on books that are in the public domain. The site is very large and includes sound recordings and other works of art in addition to it's ebooks.
