United States of America
To start with, one should know that the Salisbury Zoo is a "New World" only zoo. This means that all the animals found there are indigenous to North or South America; no "Old World" animals are found there. Some of the animals are actually indigenous (or were) to the area around Salisbury.
The zoo is rather small and a complete walk through of it can be accomplished in under two hours. Given that the zoo is open year-round, except Christmas and Thanksgiving, it is not often crowded. My wife and I had a relaxing time on both of the occasions that we visited the zoo.
So what animals are at the zoo? A complete list of the current habitants can be found here: www.salisburyzoo.org/ . A few animals stick out to me. The zoo has North American bison, a melanistic jaguar (black panther), red wolves, and the oldest Andean bear in captivity. For a zoo of its size, it boasts some uncommon finds like spider monkeys, a bald eagle, coati mundi, and the afore mentioned Andean bear.
There is not a whole lot wrong with this attraction. It is cheap - again free. Parking is ample and is also free. It is conveniently located. I have never seen a zoo or animal park located so close to a residential area. The park is well maintained and the staff is courteous. The animals are not ordinary and the signs near their habitats are quite informative.
The zoo features workshops and special events throughout the year. I have never been to one of these events but they are well advertised. During the summer weekends, there are educational "talks" that are offered. I have never participated in one of these, but I might in the future. Tours are offered, but those need to be pre-booked according to the website.
The zoo does have the obligatory gift shop. It, like the zoo, is small and unobtrusive. It is charming and does not distract one's attention from the animals.
There is not much to tell other than this is one neat, little zoo. Not many cities the size of Salisbury have a zoo and this one is (again) free! Honestly, how many free zoos are out there? Do yourself a favor - if you are ever in the southern half of the Delmarva peninsula, then visit the Salisbury Zoo in Salisbury, Maryland. Did I mention its free?
