Freecycle was formed with the purpose of keeping useable merchandise out of landfills. A very noble idea, and one that has caught on quite well-the Freecycle groups here in the United States alone have over 3 million members! Many other countries across the globe have borrowed the idea behind this network to make their own similar groups, as well.
The way these local Freecycle groups work is simple-people join the group through Yahoo. Then they can post items that they have that they no longer need (these are usually posted as an "offer") or they can post asking for items for which they are looking (these are posted as a "want"). Chances are, either you or someone you know belongs to a Freecycle group and has either made or responded to a post.
Generally, the groups run rather smoothly. Yes, the groups do have local moderators who are required to follow the guidelines as mandated by the Freecycle Organization, but for the most part, it is a self-run operation since group members are free to put up their own postings as long as they follow the rules.
I have belonged to my local Freecycle group for a few years now, and while I do see that these groups are doing an excellent job of keeping items out of the landfills, I also see that there is a great deal of strife among some of the members. Of course, the moderators try to keep any arguments or friction away from the Freecycle group itself-people who post about problems or disagreements are commonly told that they are not supposed to post off-topic comments and they are directed to the Freecycle Café group (a secondary group that is supposed to be for people to discuss local matters, but which is actually rather sparsely attended).
So, what causes the problems? What does anyone have to get upset about? Plenty, as it turns out. Here are the most common complaints that I have seen:
No-Shows: It is just plain rude to tell someone you will be somewhere to pick up an item and then not show up. No-Shows are, sadly, quite common. Sometimes a No-Show will email or call with an excuse, but more often than not this doesn't happen.
No Items: Quite often, a Freecycler will tell the person who is picking up an item that the item will be on the porch or in a bag by the steps, something like that. Sometimes, the Freecycler forgets to put the item out for the person picking up-and this, too, is quite disrespectful. After all, with gas prices the way they are nowadays, people cannot afford to drive somewhere for nothing.
Stolen Items: It doesn't happen too often, but unfortunately it does happen sometimes-every once in awhile, a Freecycler will have an item for pickup on their porch, and the person picking up will help themselves to additional items on the porch that weren't intended for pickup. This can be quite maddening, because it is difficult, if not impossible at times, to prove.
People snatch up the items being offered too quickly: This is pretty much the way things always go-a person posts an item for offer, and then moments later posts that the item is taken. This means that people who can't check their email very often or who can't type very fast often lose out-this can make people really angry at times.
There really is not much of a way to correct most of these problems, though. People are going to forget things sometimes, so the no-shows and no-items are going to happen from time-to-time. Items are still probably going to get stolen every now and then-that's just the way things are and as long as we have people leaving things out for pickup instead of staying home to greet the person picking up, this will likely happen at times.
As for people grabbing up the items as soon as they are posted, I'm not sure if there is a feasible solution to that problem. Sometimes when people post an offer, they mention that they will choose from among all respondents-this gives more people a chance to answer the post, I suppose, but it isn't really practical for every single post. Nor is it possible to moderate the group in order to keep track of which people are getting which items-that would be far too great a task to ask of anyone. So, this is one issue that really has no solution.
But, despite these troubles that Freecycle groups have had, these groups have been quite successful in their goal-for example, each day on my local Freecycle group there are dozens of posts with people offering items that they have, all of which get taken by another Freecycler. If you multiply that by the number of groups across the country, just imagine how many thousands of items are being kept out of landfills each day! Membership continues to grow in these groups, and new groups are formed all the time-you can even start your own group if there isn't one close enough. One thing's for sure-whoever dreamed up the concept behind Freecycle sure cares about our planet!

Post a CommentIt seems that thare are those in the freecycle community that are on a bit of a power trip. I know of a person that was just banned from freecyclekitsapco. ( washington state. and for no reason what so ever. this person has been a member of free cycle for many years. And now to be just tossed aside on someones powertrip. So here is my plan of action for this group I will leave the group and find the nationaql hq and file a complaint with them.and this perticular group removed from service and if need be take legal action against them
I am a moderator of a Freecycle group and a Cafe and I do understand your concerns. There are a lot of mods who are on a power trip and a lot of members out to get what they can. We only allow 3 wanted items a month then the member is cut off. We also edit out the sob stories, there is no need for them. I encourage our members to respond to wanted posts with humor, appreciation, something more than, I want it. When I post an offer I put it in my post that I won't consider anyone who doesn't respond with something funny.
As for getting help with problem mods, are you emailing info@freecycle.org? If you are not getting help there then try faq@freecycle.org or go to the freecycle page on facebook. I know a lot of people are getting answers there.
If you have not seen the members manual with a few ways to contact help, when you are on the main website up above you will see FAQ. if you click on that a tab comes down that takes you to the member manual.
Lisa was it
The group in Grand Rapids MN is run by 4 moderators who are high on the power of it......tho to be honest I am not sure how they figure this is such a place for a power trip........after being accused of picking up things to resell.......which was bull.....and them not even wanting to find out the truth.....plus all the other power plays they like to put people thru......if I can't give the stuff I have to friends or on sites like craigslist......it will go to the dump........dealing with the moderators is not worth the hassle just to give free stuff away.
It's certainly nice to see that I am not alone in my complaints about this group. Yesterday, a certain Moderator accused me of "posting a file on the web site". I had no knowledge of it, wouldn't know how to do that if I wanted to, and suggested how someone could have co-opted my ID, and expressed my concerns about the mystery. The file, incidentally, which I did not even post, consisted of a list of "curbside" posts. The fact that I HAD queried another Moderator about this practice of posting this type of pickup, which is against the rules, apparently sent "Debby" into a rage. Instead of accepting my explanation, she responded with the accusation that I was lying, and that I or "someone in my home" had indeed posted this file. Looking back, I can see that this woman has been over "moderating" me for some time, rewriting my posts, in which I have NEVER at any time broken any rule. But I was forced to defend myself, and told her so. She "asked" me leave the group because I had "gone too
I have tried to contact my local member Freecycle Outreach to complain about the horribly RUDE owner & new moderator of the NATICK MA Freecycle group, but my emails to the Outreach stite bounce back to me? I know the email addy is correct. Does anyone know what's up? Where can I complain too now? I will never use Freecycle in NATICK MA again. If anyone wants to see the emails they have sent me just email me or comment here and I will get in touch with you somehow. Unreal. Total disrespect for us members. and I used to be a moderator on the next town over's group but after being told to put up with abuse from members I had to step down. I will NOT disrespect myself like that!
where and how REALLY can you send a messaegge to the main freecycle about a certain mod who blocks almost all the new memebers?
where and who do you make a complaint to about free cycle moderators

I am new to the computer and I don't know what is consider spam or what spam is. and yes I check the group before i posted items received and I seen some messages that stated items received so I thought it was okay to post that I received items, if I was spamming or doing something wrong they should have moderated my post. i been a member over a year and dint do nothing but give. I have just offered a piece of furniture - within 12 hours I had 3 emails from 1 guy, the second 2 in capitals wondering why I hadn't immediately given the furniture to him. There were at least 3 others who sent repeated requests, with my getting over 30 emails altogether. I hung on till the second morning to give everyone a chance and then picked a requestee at random. The guy who wrote to me in capitals then sent me an offensive email. Charming
Freeycycle and their group owners are good things, however, its the heriarchy that brings this down, their grassroots status has slumped since they have been recieving money from grants and loans and now sponsored by Waste Management Inc. Where is all the money going? Into the founders pocket and to take anyone to court who dares use the word Freecycle in any terms ie - freecycler or freecycling. Freecycle is good, the owners and mods who give their time unreservedly is good, the Freecycle Network?? Not Good. Before long Freecycle will be for sale to the highest bidder - Namely incorporated into Waste Management Inc. There are plenty of other places out there to join, these are Sharing is Giving(http://www.sharingisgiving.org), Freesharing (http://www.freesharing.org) and in the UK RealCycle (http://www.realcycle.co.uk
