When the framers of the Constitution sat down to write, they envisioned a nation that was free from every kind of bondage - free to worship, free to pursue happiness, free to choose, free to speak. Our fathers were ready and willing to spill their blood and give their lives to ensure that we remain free.

Over the centuries, many Americans have given their lives and continue to do so to ensure that we never become a people without our freedoms. We remain grateful and indebted to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. One way to honor what they have given is to ensure that we respect each other's rights to the freedoms we enjoy - especially the freedom of speech.

I am therefore appalled by what appears to be an effort by some to silence certain groups of people. Anyone, anywhere, should be able to say anything short of what may be construed as a threat or an assault. No one should feel compelled to say what a particular audience or person wants to hear in order not to offend, better yet, to be considered mainstream. Speech is free!

This brings me to what happened to Miss. California. She was asked a question regarding gays, but was presumptuous enough to answer truthfully - based on her beliefs. Who does she think she is to speak freely about her values? She should have given the answer that aligned with the judge's values - the answer he wanted to hear. Miss. California was viciously attacked and punished for exercising her right to speak freely. How preposterous! Isn't this America, the land of the free?

If I am pro-choice, that is my right. If I am pro gay marriage, that is my right. There are millions who will agree with my thoughts on those social issues. Conversely, if think abortion is murder - partial birth abortion heinous, that is my right. If I believe that gay marriage is wrong and unnatural, that also is my right. I should be able to speak freely about these subjects without being attacked. Disagreed with, yes, but attacked, no - a resounding "No!"

Do you believe that there is a double standard when some can call Christians deranged, bigots, disillusioned, hateful, right-wing nuts, etc. for saying what they believe? Yet, Christians are wrong to say what they oppose or what their faith encompasses. Why does it appear that speech is free for some, but not for others? No! No! No! This is America! This ought not to be!

As far as I know, the US Constitution says that speech is free for all Americans. It may be time to re-acquaint ourselves with what is rightfully ours.
