Freedom of Speech, Do We Still Believe in It?

Mary Lynn
Did I miss when we took freedom of speech out of the constitution? I'm starting to think so. Every day you hear in the news how political figures are trying to revoke someone's right to free speech because they don't want to hear or watch something that offends them. Recently, Don Imus was in the news for his derogatory remarks that he made against a basketball team. Now the powers that be are waging a war against rap music again for the degrading words that entertainers use to talk about women. I agree those type of statements are wrong but my problem with this is we the people are blaming the person that is doing it rather than blaming ourselves for giving them the publicity that the entertainer wants. If we as a society would just cut them off financially, then they will eventually be out of money to do these things. Silence and ignoring the entertainer will keep them from having the millions it takes to promote their concert tours and albums.

Another point that I would like to make is that we make the choice of what entertainment we participate in. We are not forced as a culture to listen to a certain media outlet, each of us have choices that came with our freedom. If we would stop whining about the media portraying what we see as negative press and stop letting them feed off of our views, they will stop making it more important than things like cancer research, we will be stomping all of the degrading voices in the entertainment industry.

This is a fight that has gotten out of control with the news stations and political groups help. When you turn your T.V. on, do you have more than one station? When a song comes on the radio can you change the station? If a newspaper has a story that you don't agree with, are you forced to read it? As you can see, we have choices, so let's use our power too chose instead of claim it is not our fault and it is the entertainment industries complete fault.

These parents that complain about these video games that have violence need to realize it is their responsibility to teach their children that those kind of games can be harmful and are not allowed. It is not the entertainment industries job to raise their children for them. The entertainment industry did not buy the game for the child, the parent did.

Our country stands for it's freedom. Why are we so set on taking freedom away from people just because we are not wanting to be a responsible adult and make decisions on our own. they have freedom of speech and you have freedom of choice. If you are one of those that are on the bandwagon trying to impeach someone's free speech, look inside of yourself and ask this question, "How would I feel if my right to vote was revoked because of my views?", the answer to this would be simple, you would be outraged. That's how these entertainment industry people feel about people that are complaining about what they say or do.

People died for our freedom that we cherish so much. Don't let their deaths be in vain by taking away someone's freedoms. We chose what we watch, listen to, or read. Why give who we don't like press to make them money to continue. Ignorance and hate is not going to help this situation any. We need to take control of our own lives and let others worry about their choices rather than try to gain a communist attitude and try to tell them how to think.

Its not the Games or T.V cencring i mind, its the fact that people don't use it in public just because some one will get offended.OR the fact that perents don't teach there kids whats bad because there to lazy so the get mad at the next person. The T.V companys, or the music companys. Any way better rap this up, this coment is too long.

Jim, politicians act all the time. They act like they know what they're doing. Actors have a right to express their political opinions just like the rest of us. And unlike most of the rest of us, many of them are college educated and as such a bit more educated about the issues.

Everytime we take away freedoms from someone else because they do what we don't like, we pave the way for freedoms we enjoy to be taken as well. I am all for restricting freedoms of killers, rapists, thieves, child molestors and even hate groups like the KKK. I would love to see Howard Stern's voice removed from the airwaves, but many find the man entertaining and I do not have to tune in. I think Freedom of Speech in the constitution was meant to protect citizens from government oppression, not an individuals rights to use words that hurt people.

Nice work Mary. I would disagree with one point of your abstract though. Entertainers should entertain. It is hardly right for one to gain fame, fortune and the ability to sway the masses and then use that ability for anything other than entertainment. When politicians start acting, I'll start listening to the opinions of the Susan Sarandons of the world. Til then they should stick to what they know.
