Freelance: Use Local Contacts and the Internet to Find Jobs

Lea Barton
Freelance work on the internet can be your way to self-employment. You get to work from home for yourself at your own pace and take or reject as much work as you want. As long as you have a computer and internet access you can work from your home doing freelance contracts.

I know you are probably wondering what type of work can you do freelance from home? The answer is almost anything. Some of the types of freelance contracts that are offered on the internet include:

  • Writing. If you like to write or have worked at a newspaper, publisher, or have other writing experience there is an abundance of freelance opportunities for you on the internet. Some writing work may be simple like key word articles and some may be more complex like writing prime content articles, but you can pace yourself and take the contracts you choose.
  • Accounting or Bookkeeping. Many companies hire out for accountants through freelance contracts. They send you the financial information and you prepare their records and tax documentation from the comfort of your own home.
  • Editing. Many book, magazine, and other media sources use freelance contracts as a way to edit their publications.
  • Web site testing. Some internet websites will hire people to go to their websites and test for any errors in their links, grammar, spelling, functionality, and more. Some of these contracts require no qualifications because they may just want you to tell them if the website is user friendly or not.
  • Research. Some contracts just want research done for their project.
  • Data Processing and cross referencing. If you are good at data entry some contracts will send you files to format or cross reference to make sure there are no duplicates.
  • Legal and medical billing. Many doctor's offices and law firms hire freelance workers to do their billing.
  • Collections. Many collection companies or credit companies will hire freelance workers to try and collect their owed debts. This process usually involves sending letters and notifications of debt as well as phone calls to the debtors.
  • Computer programming. If you are in the business of programming computers many companies offer freelance opportunities in this area.
  • And many, many more.

These are just some of the freelance opportunities awaiting you on the internet if you want to be your own boss and work from home. Not only can you take on as many contracts as you can handle from various companies, but you can do the work from anywhere. If you are on vacation all you need is a computer and the internet and you can finish your contract.

To get started with your freelance internet business, go to sites that list freelance contracts, such as Guru, FreelanceWorkExchange, and Elance. Register with as many websites as possible to be a member. But don't stop there.

Look at your local Craigslist. You might be surprised by the level of activity you find o Craigslist; offer a listing of your services, or a link to your business website to get local business.

Call your local newspaper and see if they are hiring reporters for community events. Or contact non-profit organizations that need small levels of business services, and they turn that experience into larger gigs with bigger companies.

The more websites you join and the more you network, the more of a chance you have of getting great contracts. Then browse through the contract opportunities and choose the ones you like the most. Read through the websites bidding requirements for contracts and begin bidding on the ones you are confident you can complete in a professional manner.

Great article with fantastic tips! I also suggest that individuals use sites like Elance.com to find legitimate projects with great buyers. To date, I have completed over 800+ Elance projects and highly recommend them to both newbie and experienced freelancers.
