Freelance Writing Beginner Tips - Internet Journalism

Michael Luchies
Writing online is a very fun and rewarding activity. Just like starting a new job, their is a learning curve when beginning to write on the Internet. Here are several tips and words of advice as you start to write online.

Be Selective When Reading Comments

There is a reason that professional journalists and sports talk radio show hosts stray away from message boards. Especially when writing opinion articles and sports related predictions, most the comments you receive will be negative and some will attack your judgment, writing skills, and you as a person. As tough as it may be to refrain from responding in a critical manner, you must keep your cool and continue writing. Even the best in the industry get hateful comments, don't take them personally, that is what they are trying to accomplish.

Proof Read Again

Proof reading something you have just written can be very boring, but must be done. Too many times I have published an article only to get a comment several hours later on a misspelled word or improper use of a word that I simply overlooked. Internet article readers are often very picky about grammar in the articles they read, and they should be.

Have Thick Skin

Not only should you avoid responding to negative comments and letting them upset you, also be strong when putting together a body of work. Taking a considerable amount of time to create a fantastic article only to see it fail to attract views can be frustrating. Editors on certain websites may also be picky. You may have to revise an article several times and still not receive an upfront payment for it. Do not be discouraged, writing is not always easy, be tough.

Promote Articles

Make your articles available to read. Simply publishing them is often not enough to gather a solid number of views. Create several free blogs based on the topics you will write about the most. Post a link to your article along with a short description on the blog and then submit proper keywords that will show up in search engine results. Marketing is important when writing freelance articles and relying on views to earn money.

Be Patient

My early expectations of instant recognition and thousands of readers were quickly shattered by the realization that actual hard work, solid writing skills, and picking the right topics are all required to gain views. When starting to write online you must be very patient for those first few thousand views. Receiving over a million views took me two years and over 350 articles.

Publish Often

Gaining subscribers and fans of your writing is important in receiving consistent views of your work. By publishing often you give them a reason to continue their support. If you start to run out of ideas, reflect on something you have a lot of knowledge in that others may be interested in hearing about. If you are taking classes at a university or college publish your papers you write for class. Publishing often also keeps your writing skills strong and will hold your interest in writing online.
