Freelance Writing Books to Get Started with Writing

Laurie Tam
Writing is one of the many art forms that I consider as a creative field since creativity counts such as in poetry, business writings, and writing stories. As a freelance writing mom of three expecting a fourth child, I know that writing as in other freelance positions can be a lonely world since you are working by yourself. If you are a beginner, experience writer or planning to get into this field, there are books that I can recommend which you can start off on how to get into it as well as writing tips and other ideas for more experienced writers. Here is the list of books which I also have in my collection.

1. Writer Mama by Christina Katz- I got this book first which I was thinking about getting into the writing field back in June 2008. She start off by giving you ideas on what to write as well as show you examples such as query letters to write at different magazine. The best way to go after a certain magazine is if you are a reader yourself. That way, you would get a feel of what the audience want that also read that publication. Contributing writers in magazines are what most of them use. It doesn't hurt to get other ideas from her which is mainly aim at other writer mamas.

2. How to Get Started In Freelance Writing by Robert Bly- Another writer that I love getting ideas from. The one I got was a updated version made in 2008 and added in a few sections such as poetry. He also list 5 writing fields that are pretty lucrative and easy to get started.

3. 88 Money-Making Writing Jobs by Robert Bly- Second out of four books I have of his, he list 88 different ways where anyone can make money such as business writings (PowerPoint Presentation, Catalog Copywriting, Copywriting, etc), love letter writings, poetry, and playwriting.

4. Secrets of A Freelance Writer How to make $100,000 A Year or More by Robert Bly- Third book I own and this one is pretty good as well. He had this updated in 2006 and the way to make as much money as he does is to get into business writings. He made a list of some business writings that are lucrative for some company such as in brochure, employee communications, just to name a few. Commercial freelance writers make two to four times more than magazine articles and books.

5. The Online Copywriting Handbook by Robert Bly- Another book worth noting and he even have "The Copywriting Handbook."This book talks about how you can make money as a online copywriter with some tips and tricks on what he knows as a experience copywriter. Examples are included on how to write some materials such as business writing where he compare what regular people understand to technical talk. This book came out in 2001 and with three web site provided, this book will never go out of date.

6. The Six Figure Freelancing by Kelly James Enger- As a former lawyer, she knew that she wanted to become a freelance writer became another famous writer alongside Robert Bly. One of her main points about being a writer is time management and using an example of her schedule show that anybody can squeeze in time for writing if you are serious on making an income for yourself. She also state that before you become a full time writer, you should work at your regular day job until you make enough to survive with your freelance writing business.

I hope that you enjoy reading the list of books that I own as my collection which help me on my journey to freelance writing. You should take this seriously but also take in the time to have fun and be with your family as what Robert Bly stated. I wish you more luck with your freelance writing career and get started.
