Freelance Writing - How I Make My Money

Katherine Huether
After a few years, I'm finally confident that I can make a good living as a freelance writer. So, I am going to share with you all the techniques and websites that have brought me success. In fact, I've been pretty blessed.

Writing Queries

I got my first real clips by sending out a lot of queries. I challenged myself to write 25 queries a month. By the end of the second month, I had secured three paid assignments in the food writing niche. Now, food writing is my true passion. But, i wouldn't have known it if I didn't write these queries. I've learned that getting published clips is very much a numbers game.

ExquisiteWriting.com

ExquisiteWriting.com is an agency that helps writers obtain work. When I first started freelancing, I posted a lot of bids on job sites. I worked hard completing my assignments, but I quickly learned that bidding was a real time waster. I am so glad I found them (or rather, they found me). Now, I have a steady stream of work and the only effort I need to put in to get jobs is to send an email requesting work. Payments are prompt and regular and my only requirement is to do the work. The agency takes care of corresponding with the client. Click here for more information.

BlogtoProfit.com

Blog to Profit is a new system that helps you get money for your blog. It is similar to Blogitive, which I also use. For each post you make including the link they provide, you'll receive $5 USD. The posts are quick to make, which translates to some pretty good money. Click here to sign up. When you do, put my email address "kohuether@kohuether.com" in the referral field. I get a bonus. Once you sign up, you can also start referring people for the same perks. You just need a paypal account to get your money. Again, payments are prompt and the extra cash is very nice.
Blogitive

Blogitive is the same thing as Blog to Profit, but they've been around longer so the system is pretty well established. It is also $5 USD per post you make. Each link has a press release with it that pretty much outlines the things you should include in your post. At first, I thought this was cumbersome, but now I like having that option. Rentacoder.com

When I first started out, I didn't know how likely it would be that I would find success on the freelance job board sites. I didn't know if my bids would amount to anything. So, I didn't want to pay a membership fee. Rent A Coder doesn't require a monthly fee. They take the money out as a commission for each project. I've made a considerable amount of money through them and it has been a great way to build my portfolio. Click here for more inmformation.

Get A Freelancer takes a commision just like Rent A Coder, but they also have other membership options. The goal with both of these sites is to learn how to place successful bids so you can get as much work as possible. I landed my first copywriting assignment from this site. Great tips -- marketing yourself is the key to freelancing success. I personally use Elance.com as my online marketplace of choice and have had a lot of success there - completed over 800+ projects in over 10 years. : )

Great article. It's good to hear where other freelance writers get their work. I'd never heard of ExquisiteWriting.com before.

Oh No! I wish I could go back and fix that. :( Can I? I originally wrote this for one of my blogs and I attached the links but I didn't think I could do that here and I didn't take those sentences out!
