Freelancing - a How to Guide
1. Make sure you are very knowledgeable in the area that you would like to work and have training and or experience to back up your skills.
2. Show off your best side by creating business card, a website, or portfolio that shows customers what you are all about.
3. Your best tool will be networking. Join sites like facebook.com, linkedin.com and myspace.com to connect with other people in your field and to help you find jobs. You can also probably find industry specific sites and groups that you can join as well.
4. Let everyone know what you are doing! This is the best way to get your first job. Send emails and call friends and family and get the word out.
5. Do your research and find out what going rates are in your area for your type of work and price yourself accordingly.
6. Make a template invoice to use in collecting payments.
7. Get a good tax preparer and discuss all of the tax implications of working freelance.
