The public lives of public officials are becoming fair ground for the media and journalists around the world.
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has endured a heated investigation into his recent indiscretions. He is being charged with a perjury and misconduct within the workplace. He was found to have had a secret relationship with his former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty. The newspapers have even published the secret text messages of their relationship in the paper for public viewing. The City Council of the city of Detroit is in litigation to get Governor Jennifer Granholm to evict the Mayor from his office. All of these new developments have caused voters and citizens to have less confidence in their elected officials.
Former Mayor of New York Eliot Spitzer's life has been in the press for the last couple of months. He has resigned after it was revealed that he had received the services of call girls. He was even heard on a wiretap. He tearfully apologized to the people of New York and his family. The spotlight on politics is hot right now. With everybody in the business of digging up dirt and publishing it, nobody is safe anymore. The publicity alone has made his escort Ashley Alexandra Dupre an internet star.
Governor of Nevada Jim Gibbons has been under scrutiny as well. It has been reported in the New York Times that he had raised $256,000 for a legal defense fund that was not reported to the House of Representatives, of which he is a member. He started this fund after he was accused of sexual assault by an un-named woman. This included money from the famed Palms Hotel and other casinos. This comes on the heels of him being investigated by federal authorities. With all of these political secrets coming to light, it is time that our public officials live what they preach.
Living in the eye of the spotlight is something that only movie stars have had to deal with. Since the United States has become the reality TV center of the world, everybody is fair game. Politicians are the new celebrities and their families and actions are under heavy surveillance. Seeing the political climate as it is today, there can only be more to come in this New Year. Anyone thinking about running for a public office must be ready to give an account of things they have done or are doing. We should all ask ourselves if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
