A new champion is crowned at Roland Garros today. All veteran players have gone down early. Commentators John McEnroe and Ted Robinson inform us minute-by-minute of what is taking place before our eyes in the 82 degree weather.

Neither Samantha Stosur or Francesca Schiavone has ever been in a Grand Slam final before. Francesca Schiavone would be the first Italian player ever to win a Grand Slam final. She will celebrate her 30th birthday shortly.

Samantha Stosur, a former doubles champion, does not show a lot of emotion on the court, particularly today when she is wearing sunglasses. Physically fit, Stosur presents herself as a good ad for the benefits of being a tennis player. Lime disease had kept her out of the competition for over a year. A win by Stosur would make her the first Australian woman to win a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon thirty years ago, in 1980.

The first set was won by Francesca Schiavone, 6-3. The second set was won by Francesca Schiavone, 7-6, making her the 2010 French Open Women's Champion.

Mary Pierce, French Open Women's Champion in the year 2000, presented the trophy to Francesca Schiavone, the first Italian Woman's Grand Slam Champion.

On Sunday, Day 15, we will witness the match between Rafael Nadal (2) and Robin Soderling (5) who will vie for the French Open Men's Championship for 2010.
