Fresh Fonts for the Non-Designer

We've come a long way since the typewriter. Where there was once a universal font for all writers, now we have more fonts than Crayola has colors. Fortunately, Comic Sans no longer rules the world and we have a bounty of striking fonts to choose from. Graphic designers aren't the only ones who should get the pleasure of using cool typography. Any Tom, Joe, or Sasha can buy or download a font that will make their copy aesthetically pleasing. Because in a world obsessed with visuals, words don't only have to sound good, they should look good too. With new fonts surfacing on a daily basis, this list is only a minuscule sample of the bevy of unique options that typists have to choose from.

That Luvin' Feelin. It's the Kama Sutra for computer geeks. Each letter of the alphabet represents a different sexual position and ironically, the uppercase positions take a little more experience, finesse and flexibility than the lowercase ones. The illustrations aren't completely clear at all font sizes, but if you're feeling frisky, you can make your font explode on the screen for a full view. The font, which was created by a designer named Jason Ramirez, can be downloaded on DaFont.com.

Scrabble. It's what it sounds like. Each letter resembles a scrabble piece. The pieces/letters even have their actual point values on the lower right hand corner. Now every word nerd can use the pieces of their favorite game for their copy. This font can be downloaded for free on TypeNow.net.

Kingthings Christmas. Kevin King created a font with holiday spirit. This font is a festive collection of letters that sit atop a heap of white snow. Flakes of snow even fall upon your copy, making the visual complete. Even if you reside in the Deep South where snow is something you can only shake up in a small globe on top of your mantel, you can still appreciate this font's resemblance to a winter wonderland. Check out other Kevin King fonts on DaFont.com.

Nintendo. When you think of the vintage Nintendo game system, you may think of Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt and Pac Mac. While the font of the Nintendo logo may not be as memorable as the system itself, true gamers can reminisce by using this typeset. It's available for download on TypeNow.net along with the classic Atari, Sega, Playstation 2 and PS2 fonts.

The Goonies. Think 1985, hidden treasures, deviously determined kids, and a one-eyed pirate. "The Goonies" is a movie that the young and old can still enjoy over a tube of Pez and a can of soda pop. For the biggest Goonies fan (read: the writer of this article), the quasi-creepy font is available to use at your leisure and it's available for download on TypeNow.net.

Iron Maiden. Take heavy metal straight from the mosh pit to your Word document. If you're a metal fan, there's no doubt that you've listened to a touch of Iron Maiden in your day. And if you're a true fanatic, you're most likely familiar with the boxy, distorted font that makes the band's logo distinctive. You can download this font from SimplyTheBest.net and make some head-bangin' copy.

Everyone from movie buffs, video game connoisseurs, couch potatoes, to music fanatics can find a font that fits their personality and interests. DaFont.com, SimplyTheBest.net and TypeNow.net are great sites to find groovy fonts to tickle your typography needs. They're free, creative, and if you have basic Photoshop skills, you can make great promotional materials for your next garage sale, house party, or soiree without having to resort to using the usual drab aesthetics.
