Fresh Wheatgrass. It's Good for You!

Adam Niebs
Fresh wheatgrass is a complete whole food with enzymes, amino acids, phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and chlorophyll working in perfect harmony to help rid the body of toxins and creating overall good health. It is also a natural pH balancer, neutralizing acidity in the body. Wheatgrass is sprouted wheat kernels that have been allowed to grow to a height of six inches or more, usually for seven to fourteen days (depending on warmth), either indoors or outdoors in trays or in the open ground. This grass is an excellent source of calcium and it has other minerals that are necessary for the body to use it.

Wheatgrass also termed as green gold is available fresh and in various forms like tablet, frozen juice and powder. Fresh wheatgrass has also been used to aid in the healing of skin conditions, prevent tooth decay, and reduce rheumatic pain. It also helps in fighting conditions like arthritis, cancer, hypertension, menstrual problems, asthma etc.

To get all of its nutrients, juice can be extracted directly from fresh wheatgrass. Start by drinking one ounce of fresh juice every day or adding a teaspoon of wheatgrass powder to juice or a smoothie. The body can fully absorb all the nutrients in wheatgrass when it's been juiced. That's why eating or blending the grass is discouraged. Until you get used to the taste, consider using a chaser of a juice you know and love. Wheatgrass juice does not combine well with other foods and should always be taken on an empty stomach.

Wheatgrass improves skin tone and muscle tone and is also a solution to various skin disorders. The expelled pulp and juice can be used in first aid procedures when applied to sunburned skin, rashes, boils and cuts. It can also be applied topically by putting the pulp or a specially made cream directly on the skin. It stimulates the growth of healthy, new skin and 'tightens' older skin. (Bye bye plastic surgery!)

Wheatgrass is the complementary medicine of the 21st century. It is fast becoming one of the most widely used supplemental health foods. Wheatgrass is available planted in trays of soil and in tablets, capsules, liquid extracts, tinctures, and juices.

So the next time you're at the juice bar, have a shot of fresh wheatgrass. It's good for you!
