Freshwater Aquarium Lights: Uses and Replacement

Shannon Frye
Freshwater fish tank lights are very important. You will want to purchase a timer for your fish tank light. The timer will cost you somewhere around $15. It will save you money on electricity and it will help out your fish tank as well. All you need to do is plug the timer into the outlet and then plug the light into the plug in on the timer. You can then set the timer to come on for a certain amount of time. The light will shut off as well. This works for any light on your freshwater fish tank. It's nice because you don't have to remember to turn your light on and off.

Your light is very important for your fish. Fish need a certain amount of light every single day. You will want to keep your light on for about 6 or 7 hours but not any longer than that. If you leave your light on for longer you will develop an algae problem. You only want to have the light on for a certain amount of time, which is why the timer comes in handy. Aquarium lights are very important and you need to have one on your fish tank.

You will also want to remember to replace the light on your fish tank at least once a year. The light will still come on but it's pretty much useless after one year. You can purchase replacement bulbs from the pet store. You will want to bring in your light or write down the dimensions so that you know how big the light is. You want to make sure that the light will fit on your fish tank. You can purchase lights which have different shades as well. Some lights will be very bright and make your fish look really good.

You will probably spend around $25 on a new aquarium light. You can either choose to turn the light on everyday by pressing down on the knob or you can hook it up to a timer to make sure that the light always goes off and comes on at a certain time through out the day. This is easy on your fish. Remember not to feed the fish until you light has been on for at least ten minutes. When the light comes on, your fish will go into shock for the first couple of minutes because it scares them. If you feed them right away, they will not eat the food.
