Friday Night at the Black Olive

I headed out this last Friday night with clear intent in my mind. Martinis, low key atmosphere and good food! I had wandered into such a place a while back and wanted to return with apple martini's in mind. The pull of black wood and low hanging lights all tucked into the old building on High Street in Columbus was too great to resist.

I hadn't even taken the time to change before heading out but was dressed in gray slacks, green top and a green sweater so, I was dressed acceptably. A little into my evening in conversation with the gentleman next to me, I was told I blended right in. Most of the patrons wandering in were dressed in black, gray, brown or a mix of all three. Some were in jeans and a few of the ladies wore mini skirts or dresses, one girl even wore a tiara in honor of her birthday. They all blended right in with the dark woods, black furnishings and the low key lights. I have to say I remember the drinks and the food slightly better than details of the decor and what everyone was wearing at the moment.

I chose to sit at the far end of the bar which gave me a view of most of the restaurant not including the table directly behind me. The people were friendly including the help but not overly so. The staff was efficient and professional and I saw no evidence of discontent in any of their faces. In fact, the bartender that first greeted me sat down at the bar to relax when his shift was done. The interesting mix of people made for good conversation over my extended stay which lasted about three hours. I noticed that several of the parties were there just as long as I was.

The food I tried that evening, calamari was perfection. It was served with a sauce that had just a bit of kick to it and I finished off the whole plate just to show appreciation for how delicious it was. Two apple martinis, also perfection were served by competent staff all dressed in black that were very professional.

I must say it was a tight ship! People were lined up in the hall polishing glasses and holding them up for closer examination. I don't remember a dirty table or corner anywhere. I was extremely pleased with my experience and will return again.
