Frigidaire Gallery Series Washer and Dryer - a Review

Review of Frigidaire's Front Loading Washer and Electric Dryer

L. Lark
If you are in the market for a new washing machine and dryer, you may be considering buying the Frigidaire Gallery Series front-loading washer and dryer. With the popularity and priciness of front loading washing machines, the Frigidaire is worth a look.

Front Loading Frigidaire Gallery Series Washing Machine

If you are in the market for a washing machine which will save you money and be gentle on your clothes, you may want to consider the Frigidaire Gallery Series Front Loader.

Saving Water

This washing machine uses only a minimal amount of water to wash your clothes. It senses exactly how much water is need for the load, and adjusts accordingly. This is both a plus and a minus to this front loading washing machine.

Keeping your water bill and your heating bill low are two definite plusses. This washing machine will automatically sense just how much water to use based on your cycle choice and load size. You don't have to worry about forgetting to adjust the washer to a small load and wasting water or the energy to heat it.

However, you can not override this automatic function and I find this to be an occasional negative. There are times when you may want an especially dirty load of wash to swish around in some extra water to really get it clean. This is not an option in the Gallery Series Front Loading Washing Machine. You can, however, add an extra rinse or spin, so this had not been a major problem.

Cycle Selection

The Frigidaire Gallery Series washer has a fantastic selection of load and cycle settings. The following are just a few of the cycles you can choose from: Normal, Heavy, Perm Press, Quick, Silk, Touch Up, Bulky, Rinse/Spin, Hand Wash and many more.

The Spin/Rinse Cycles have many choices as well. You can spin from High down to Hang Dry or No Spin. And Rinse has choices ranging from Press Saver (always a great thing), Extra Rinse, Extra Spin, Normal and Heavy.

It is easy to make the cycle choices. All selections are lit for you, so you can verify that you have made the correct selections. Once you have started the washer, the Front Door Locked indicator will light due to the fact that it is front loading.

Front Loading Washing Machine

Since this is a front loading washing machine, it has no agitator. This is fantastic if you have delicate clothes, bedding or other washables.

I have washed several of my hand made crocheted blankets in this machine and they have emerged clean and unscathed. I highly recommend this washing machine for delicates.

Negatives

For the most part, this front loading washing machine has performed very well. About the only thing that I don't like about it is the lint. This washing machine is not very good at removing lint from clothes.

Since it is the only front loading washer I have ever had, I do not know if that is a common problem with this type of washing machines. Since they load from the front, there is no lint filter to place on the agitator and clothes tend to come out with just as much lint as when they went in.

The only other thing that I would change about this washing machine is the automatic water level. As I mentioned previously, it would be better if there was an override for this function for occasional use.

Positives

The capacity on the Frigidaire Gallery Series front loading washing machine is fantastic. I have the Super Capacity size washer, and I can tell you that I can fit a huge load of bedding or other wash in this washing machine.

This washer is also quite gentle of your laundry. I recommend this front loading washing machine for delicates of hand washables. It does a terrific job.

The Gallery Series Front Loading Washing Machine also has a terrific cycle selection. You can adjust it to almost anything you can think of.

Energy Saver. This washing machine is an Energy Start rated appliance. It will save you money on your water, electric heating and detergent bills.

Frigidaire Gallery Series Dryer

This electric clothes dryer has worked very well for me. As with anything, I have a few gripes, but for the most part, I this is a great dryer with a large capacity.

Moisture Sensor

The Frigidaire Gallery Series Electric Dryer has an automatic Moisture Sensor. This is fantastic, as you do not have to guess at how long it will take to dry your laundry.

You can set the Moisture Sensor to from More Dry to Damp and the Gallery Series Electric Dryer will automatically sense when your clothes are fully dry.

Cycle Selection

The Frigidaire Gallery Series Dryer also has a terrific cycle selection. You can choose from among settings such as Normal, Towels, Perm Press, Quick, Delicate and Bulky. There is also a timed cycle, a Shrink Guard setting and a Press Saver setting.

You can choose the heat level as well. This can adjust from High all the way down to No Heat. Very handy if you just want to tumble the wrinkles out of something or snap a sweater back into shape.

Positives

This dryer has worked very well for me for the most part. I have been able to dry delicates in the Frigidaire Gallery Series Electric Dryer with no problems at all. I also love the way you can adjust the cycles setting to be quite specific. I have found that this saves me time and energy.

The dryer has an interior light which goes on and off when the dryer door opens. This is a handy feature.

The capacity of this dryer is also superb. I can fit very large loads of laundry in this machine and it performs well.

Negatives

There are two minor negatives I have found with this dryer. The first is that the door does not always close well. I have to really slam it to close it properly. However, I have a feeling that this is specific to my particular dryer.

The only other negative about this dryer is that even on the More Dry setting, my heavier clothes tend to be a little damp when the cycle is done.

Frigidaire Gallery Series Front Loading Washer and Dryer

All-in-all, I have been very happy with this washing machine and dryer. Aside from the few negatives I have already mentioned, I have found this pair of appliances to perform well and as expected. They are also clean and modern looking.

The huge amount of cycle choices really allows you to customize your wash loads and thus, save time and energy. I have been using the Frigidaire Gallery Series Front Loading Washing Machine and Dryer for almost a year now and recommend them.

  • do buy a fridgidair with a 5 yr warrenty12/13/2010

get the warrenty so when it dies they will refund your money. Thats what boscov's did for me. I was so happy to hear that after 4.5 yrs the barrings broke and it was too expensive to fix. But I hve to say that i have 3 kids and threw everything in this washer, and the dryer still works besides the auto sencing is not so great.

frigidaire gallery front load washers are absolute junk. 3 years old with average use in smaller household and it's junk. switched to another company.

DRY WILL EAT YOUR CLOTHING!! Bought the dryer a year and a half ago. Its already falling apart. The drum has begun to sag and catches the cloths and twists and rips them um, there is also a gap in the glass on the door that rips the buttons off of everything. Customer service offered to pay for parts but left repair costs in my hands. I made the mistake of buying frigidaire and now I'm paying for it. I will never make that mistake again.

I've been very pleased w/my Gallery GLTF1670A until today. It isn't moving through the cycles...maybe the clock/timer is broken. Is it worth fixing?

MOLD! MOLD! MOLD! This is a constant problem. with our Frigidaire Gallery Series upright washer. Nothing gets rid of the mold in the outer rim gasket of the washer. It is full of mold. I spray it and scrub it with bleach and run vinegar through the cycle but nothing get the mold out or the disgusting smell that is in the washer or then in the clothes and towels. I've called Frigidaire and they do not stand behind their product, they say there is nothing they can do about it. There is no gasket replacement. I had some of these concerns almost immediately and both the store that I bought it from and Frigidaire just said whatever they could to get me to shut up and go away. We have had some illness in my home, maybe when some lawsuits start flying Frigidaire might do a recall.

We have a Frigidaire Gallery GLTF1240AS front loader washer.
I was told that it could wash one comforter with ease, which it does.

My major complaint is that after only 2 years and 3 months one of the shocks snapped off -- they are only held on by plastic!!

Of course the warranty expired after 2 years!!

We were told that it would cost ~ $450 to repair!! and Better to just run it until it died.
The repair guy also told us that these machines just are not made to last!!
The lady at the laundromat told us not to wash comforters, even though the sales people tell you they can wash a comforter!!

Definitely I am disappointed that I have to spend over $400 to repair a $700 machine after only 2.5 years!!
My last machine purchased was a new top loader and lasted 18 years!! We called the repairman once only after 10 years.

My advice would be to get the longest possible extended warranty you can get.

I too was terribly annoyed by the volume of the buzzer on the Frigidaire Gallery set that I have in my apartment. Because there is no way to turn it off with a switch I decided to look around and managed to find a technician manual that had some diagrams of where the buzzers are located.

I managed to turn both of them off and then put together a manual with pictures labeled detailing what you need to do. It takes about 5-10 minutes and requires nothing more than removing 6 screws and then pulling and taping off 2 wires but make sure you turn the power off first :)

Hopefully this makes things easier on someone...

To add insult to injury, when I first complained, hhgregg's first solution was to recommend that I purchase an extended warranty in first three months - insurance on the washer/dryer. If that is not a resounding vote of "no confidence" in their product, I don't know what is.
My state has an excellent "lemon law" and my commissioner really knows how to get results.

just bought affinity washer/dryer. I have to go to the laundromat up the street to re-wash my whites. The machine can't even get rid of a simple canola oil smudge on a white apron. my white towels and wash cloths come out mostly beige/tan. hhgregg was told by manufacturer to change out the washer, but the results are the same. I currently have some of my whites soaking in a pail AFTER they have been washed. The manufacturer has promised to refund my $$$. I looked at Consumer reports independent reviews and of the affinity models tested, only one is recommended - the gltf2940f(s). All others are not rated excellent or very good for washing performance.
Before these new-fangled machines, I had a Maytag for almost ten years. I did not have to call Maytag not once; not when it was under warranty and no time during those ten years. Washed like a charm. For the money I paid Frigidaire, I'd rather go down to the river and beat the clothes on the rocks. And the stench!!! another te
