As we grow older with time, we sometimes forget about those things we take most for granted. Do we remember that the Astrodome in Houston, Texas was once one of the great wonders of the world? Or perhaps the people that died like Walter Cronkite who was a famous news reporter and anchor. Well, another has died today, another whose name was not so familiar to us.

At the tender age of 90 years, Walter Frederick Morrison has died a great man. He was found in his home in Utah dead from the affliction of cancer. His passing is a great loss to his family, friends and the world.

Walter Morrison was the inventor of a very popular and unusual invention called the Frisbee. No one would have believed that the saucer shaped toy would turn out to give hours of enjoyment to children and adults worldwide. It is reported to be the most popular toy in the world. From the first time he sailed a metal cake pan on the beach one day, he knew he had something. It was something that would sell over 200 million units worldwide and provide joy for so many children. As time went by even our pets learned to have fun catching the Frisbee that Morrison invented.

Walter Frederick Morrison made his aerodynamic disc during the 1950's but later sold the production and the manufacturing rights in the year 1957. The invention was marketed as the Pluto Platter. This was eventually overtaken by the term Frisbee. Frisbee is the name penned by a group of college age students in New England were calling it. It seems the name was also linked to the Frisbie Pie Company when they could be seen tossing out the empty pie tins. They would fly a lot like the new toy. The rotation of the objects would allow it to hover and travel for long distances aided by the aerodynamic shape. From that moment on it was to set a place for itself in history and in the hearts and minds of millions of toy enthusiasts.
