Froch and Ward to Battle for Super Six Boxing Title

A few months ago, no one could've predicted that the UK's Carl Froch (28-1 with 20 KOs) would have to beat an aging journeyman boxer in the form of Jamaican born Glen Johnson to make it to the Super Six finals, but that is exactly what happened in Atlantic City. The 42 year old fighting out of Miami gave Froch all he could handle until the final bell, but even with all the effort he could muster, Johnson would come away as a loser on the majority of score cards.

It should be noted that Glen Johnson wasn't included in the original list of competitors for this competition. He found himself in an interesting situation when he was called in mid-tournament to replace the injured Mikkel Kessler. Some doubted the 42 year old's ability to drop to 168 pounds and be competitive but after knocking out Allen Green in only eight rounds, fans realized that this aging former champion still had what it took to fight with the best.

Froch, known more as a slugger than as a fine tuned boxer, fought a fairly smart fight throwing combinations, boxing well off of his back foot and trying to find a weakness in Johnson's defense. While few fight critics will ever compliment the Cobra's defensive tactics, his chin is undeniably one of the strongest in the sport. Froch was able to connect with a number of big shots over the course of the fight, but Johnson always seemed to be there with a powerful counter. While Froch managed to outpoint his opponent in the end and book his place in the finals of the super-middleweight tournament, he now finds himself with one of the toughest opponents of his career in a young and motivated Andre Ward.

A former Olympic champion, Andre Ward is still considered an "unproven" fighter by many journalists and critics. His resume (24-0 with 13 KOs) may not be quite as long as that of Froch or Johnson but he has managed to produce a number of notable recent victories including wins over Edison Miranda, Mikkel Kessler and Arthur Abraham - just to name a few. Still fairly young and undoubtedly hungry, look for Ward to come out with guns blazing at the end of this year.

While the date, city and venue have yet to be decided on, it appears as though the fight will take place sometime from late October to December. One thing that is certain is that both fighters will be given sufficient time to prepare for this match-up. Given these two fighter's styles and history, you can count on an exciting fight from the first to last bell; if it even makes it that far.

I'm not much of a boxing fan, but my husband is.
