Frog eats snake

27 December 2009 - Frogs usually dine on insects, but last week in Mackay, North Queensland, a green frog sat down to a meal of brown tree snake while other frogs looked on. It is awesome that such a small creature can fit a whole snake into its belly, let alone digest it.

This weird creature event took place in a Mackay retirement village garden where youngster Brendan Healy saw the dinner-time show while visiting his grandparents. Ian Hamilton was quick with the camera and snapped the event.

This is not the first time a frog has been snapped at a gourmet gig.

Frog eats bird

18 June 2009 - In Cairns, Babette and Carmelo Di Bella watched with disbelief and horror as their patio-dwelling friend, a green frog, devoured a young chick. Ms Di Bella photographed the gruesome dinner party after she heard bird squarks and saw the pet frog having its fill.

A local bird expert reported the bird was a dusky honeyeater.

The frog is still living on the Di Bella's patio - probably waiting for his next interesting feast.

Spider eats bird

23 October 2008 - in Atherton, west of Cairns, a mammoth spider was snapped eating a bird. It had trapped the bird in its web and clenched its legs around it.

Joel Shakespeare, head spider keeper at NSW's Australian Reptile Park, told ninemsn that the spider was a Golden Orb Weaver. He indicated that the bird was a Chestnut-breasted Mannikin which appears frozen in an angel-like pose in the pictures, and is likely to have flown into the web and got caught. He further stated - "It (the spider) wouldn`t eat the whole bird. It uses its venom to break down the bird for eating and what it leaves is a food parcel," he said.

Queensland Museum's Greg Czechura reported to ninemsn that cases of the Golden Orb Weaver eating small birds were "well known but rare". He indicated this spider builds a very strong web and would not have attacked until the bird weakened due to its struggle to free its wings.

Snake eats wallaby

28 February 2008 - Darren Cleland heard a neighbor's dog barking and rushed to the water's edge at his rural property outside Cairns. He was horrified to find a snake devouring a full-sized wallaby with a joey in its pouch. He estimated the python was at least 5metres (16.4042 feet) long.

Mr Cleland told The Cairns Post - "We were more amazed than anything that a python could get its mouth around an animal of that size. We've seen a few snakes but never anything this big."

Mr Cleland said the experience was a good lesson for his children to be wary of all snakes.

"We figured if it could eat the wallaby, it could easily eat our five-year-old."

When we visited Cairns we went on a small (4 person + guide) tour of the outback. The guide yelled and grabbed me at one point...he had spotted a huge spider not 2 feet away from me!! When I realized what was happening I let out a blood curdling scream. I am so afraid of spiders! The number of scary, poisonous critters in Australia is crazy but I still can't wait for our next trip downunder :) Interesting article.
