Frogs as Pets

Like you, I am deciding whether or not to have a habitat full of frogs. I have read up on frogs and I am going to create a list of pros and cons of having frogs as pets. First I will start with the pros.

Some frogs do not require eating mice. The smaller the frog will become the smaller bugs it will eat. Most frogs will eat bugs, frog food or mice. Frogs are very easy to take care of. You do not have to let a frog outside or take it for a walk. The only thing you need to do with a frog is clean it's tank once a week. You can purchase very neat habitats for frogs with doors that swing open in the front. You can choose to fill it up with water and have several water frogs, or you can leave the tank completely dry and get land frogs.

Frogs are neat because there are many varieties. You can choose to get a fat frog like a Whites Tree Frog. They have human like characteristics. You can purchase a water frog from a pet store which is known as an African Dwarf Frog. Frogs also can live to be over 15 years old.

The cons for frogs are different for many people. Some people like pets that live long but some people don't want to take care of a frog for 20 years. Some people like to take vacations and it's hard to find somebody to feed your frog while you are gone. The habitats can also start to smell if you don't clean them enough. Water frogs will actually smell more than land frogs. The easiest tank to clean would be a regular 10 gallon goldfish tank with a secure lid.

Frogs need secure lids or they will escape. Tree frogs can climb the walls and escape from the smallest possible spot in your tank. I would suggest buying a 10 gallon tank and using a screen top lid to keep the frog inside. You might need to use a heat lamp depending on the frog that you buy. Make sure you know what type of frog you are getting and what it needs to eat. Some frogs that get large will need to eat mice which you might not be comfortable doing.

I would suggest buying an active frog or two that you can watch. If you have too many frogs it's hard to keep track of them. You might find them in weird places because you didn't notice you were missing one or two.
