The first thing you will need to do in order to turn your old fish tank into a new herb garden is to clean it real good inside and out. After all you want it looking as good as the rest of your home. After you have cleaned the aquarium thoroughly, check it for leaks. This is an important step because you do not want your herb garden making a mess each time you water it. If you have a leak, seal it up with an epoxy sealant. If you have had to fix a leak you will need to clean the aquarium again to get fingerprints off of it. Do not use any glass cleaner on the inside of the aquarium. If you plan to set your new herb garden on a wooden piece of furniture, you may want to attach a piece of felt to the bottom of the aquarium to protect the furniture.
Now that the tank is prepared it is time to finish the project. The next step is to put a layer of gravel in the bottom. If you have the gravel you used for your fish set up it will work just fine for your herb garden. Just be sure you wash the gravel real well before putting it back into the aquarium. You will need to have about an inch layer of gravel on the bottom of the aquarium. This will allow for drainage when the herbs are watered. Now add a one inch layer of charcoal chips to the gravel layer. After adding the charcoal, it is time to add the potting soil. Fill the aquarium to about 5 inches from the top of the aquarium with potting soil. The next step is to transplant your herbs into the garden.
Your new herb garden will need to be placed where it can get sunlight. It will also require watering, it only needs to have moist soil so do not water it too much. Now all you have to do is enjoy it.
