As summer slowly wanes, and the crisp air changes in central Indiana, there is still opportunity to enjoy the bounty of flavor (and central Indiana is full of many!).
Autumn is my favorite season, and it shows itself in a variety of ways for every taste. The colors merge into a softer hue, and the aroma of fresh apple cider and stews result from the many mouth-watering surprises found at produce markets and u-pick orchards.
If you are looking to keep in touch with local vendors as well as grab a great bite to eat, Broad Ripple Farmer's Market offers a variety of produce, lasting up to Thanksgiving.
Dates & Times: Saturday 8am-12 noon through November at Broad Ripple High School (30 Vendors)
Wednesday's 5pm-8pm at Broad Ripple Indy Park (45 Vendors)
Goods: Homemade Vinegar, Honey, Baked Goods, Mushrooms, Gourds, Indian Corn, Squash and Greens
Be sure to checkout their Recipe Blog! (Their creamy curried vegetable soup is an excellent way to use leftovers from produce!)
Location: Broad Ripple Park & Broad Ripple High School; Indianapolis, IN
If you are heading your way off of I-69 and wish to stop for some of the best small-farm and urban farming produce in the area, head on over to Binford Farmer's Market.
Dates & Times: Saturday 8am-12 noon through October 29th (located outside)
Saturday 9am-12:30pm November 19th, December 3rd & 10th (Inside booths)
Goods: In addition to a large array of craft vendors, the produce vendor include a colorful spectacle of Midwest good and plenty for the fall. Apples, Beets, Greens, Watermelons, Corn, Gourds, Pumpkins, Carrots, Mushrooms, and a variety of prepared foods. Be sure to check out some of the widest selections of eggplants, squash, and gourds grown by some excellent local Amish farmers.
Location: Right off 62nd and Binford Boulevard; Indianapolis, IN
If you love quality apples, you will find this Orchard one of the best in the state. It is known for it's Ida Red, Golden Delicious, and Cortland varieties. Through fall, they will also have dates, gourds, pumpkins, winter squash, garlic, corn, and persimmons.

Apple Picking: Labor Day- end of September
Location: 5717 North 300 West, Greenfield, IN
Located in Anderson, 45 minutes north of Indianapolis, this Orchard was started as a small operation and has grown to include many varieties of apples. They also pack and preserve all sorts of pie fillings and cider.
Dates and Times: Mon-Sat 10am-7pm
Location: 3185 S 300 E. Anderson, IN
This is one of the largest apple orchards in the area.
Bags range from 1/2 peck to 1/2 bushel in size. If you love apples, this is the place to be! They grow
every variety in the area.
