From Flat to Volume with Pantene Pro-V Styling Products

Review: Fine Hair Style Hairspray and Spray Gel

Alexis Valentine
I was recently sent some Pantene Pro-V products to try out for fine hair. I was expecting one, maybe two items, but was pleasantly surprised when I received several items to try. I don't know if I have fine hair per se, that's just what I've been told by stylists in the past. What I do know is that my hair is definitely flat. I can never get my curls to hold. More often than not, by the time I'm done curling my hair, I have to go back and re-curl the other side because it had gone flat. Among the styling products I received from Pantene Pro-V's Fine Hair Style line were their Lasting Volume Hairspray and their Root Lifter Spray Gel.

I've never been much of a hair product person. When I had short hair, I used styling puddy, but generally steered clear of hairspray, especially the aerosol kind, and gel. I just didn't like the way it made my hair and scalp feel. But at the same time, I'm always looking for products that will help give my hair volume for that special occasion and keep it for more than five minutes. With any product, especially one as affordable as Pantene, I'm always skeptical about the quality, but I also try to keep an open mind. I tried both Pantene products out several times doing my normal, everyday routine and evaluated how my hair held up against the environment -- heat, wind and sometimes humidity -- and time.

I was definitely not expecting the results that I got with Lasting Volume Hairspray or Root Lifting Gel, especially the gel. Pantene's Lasting Volume hairspray is an aerosol, and I used it as instructed on the can. It dried very quickly on contact and practically froze my style in place. It didn't feel heavy at all, and surprisingly it kept my hair in place for most of the day, even with the intense summer heat beating down on my head. I found it to be a strong-hold hairspray, considering how light it was, which I think was why my hair didn't go flat after just a few hours. It did leave a tiny bit of white residue, which was just barely noticeable if I happened to comb my fingers through my hair. It didn't leave my hair feeling or looking dry and crunchy. I was even more surprised when I was able to comb it out with a wide-tooth comb. It even washed out without leaving any residue, unlike some other strong-hold and aerosol hairsprays.

Pantene's Root Lifting Spray Gel was probably the most surprising to me. I really didn't think it would work as well as it did. As with the hairspray, I used it as instructed on the bottle. I sprayed the sections of wet hair at the roots and blow dried it. It really did add volume to my hair, and it didn't at all feel like I had any product in it. While I was testing this Pantene product, I fell asleep and took a nap in the middle of the day -- summer heat does that to me -- and woke up with my hair as full and voluminous as before, as though I'd never slept on it.

All in all I was very impressed with Pantene's Fine Hair Solutions styling products. This Pantene hairspray and gel are definite keepers for me.
