If this is your homeschoolers last year at home, and they will be heading off to college next year, there are several things that you want to do to help them prepare. Going from homeschooling to college can certainly be a big change. Of course it really is not that big a difference from the adjustment that public school students will face. In fact after speaking with several homeschooling students who are now in college they have found the adjustment to be a lot easier. Below you will find several tips that may help with such a big transition.
Away or at home
Usually the first big decision to be made is whether, or not they will still live at home or stay on campus. Obviously how far away the school is will play the biggest determining factor in this decision. If it is optional however they will have to decide for themselves which is best. If they are going to be living on campuses they should have no problem caring for their personal needs. One advantage that some homeschoolers have is that they have a little more experience in home economics.
Prioritizing their schedule
Some homeschooling families make it a point to allow their high school students to set their own schedule. If you have not done this, their final year of homeschooling may be the perfect time. They will need to learn to schedule their day so that they can get what they need done. This includes fitting work into their schedule.
Make a list of contact
Since we live in the age of technology it is very easy to contact friends and family when you are away from them. Why not help them create a list of people they can get in touch with, especially those who may live in the area where they will be attending school. If you have relatives that will be near there school this may help them adjust to being away at college.
Meal plan 101
If you have not covered budget friendly meals with your homeschooler now is the time. Since you still have a year to go you can help them learn to feed themselves on a small budget. Since most students get part time jobs during their senor year in high school, show them how to cover their expenses with it. Of course they may not like the idea at first, but if they want to attend college now is certainly the right time to prepare.
