From Joey to Dad

Mary E. Coe
Dad, what we have goes way beyond just a father and a son.

What we have is precious and beautiful. You choose me;
you chose me to love .

You and mom adopted me out of all the girls and boys
you could have chosen, you chose me,

Against all odds, I was adopted by you, a wonderful dad.

Because of my age and my issues, I was told that I would
probably never get adopted.

You saw something good in me and in spite of my issues
you became my dad.

I gave you and mom a hard time at first because, I didn't think
that anyone could love me. I didn't think that I deserved to be loved.

You and mom proved me wrong; I was your son, you showed
me love that I didn't know was possible.

When I messed up and I just knew you would give up on me,
you never gave up; You were tough when you needed to be,
you praised me when I did good.

Soon all my anger disappeared, I learned to love you the way
you have always loved me.

Me, the tough guy, who didn't need anyone, who didn't need love,
I learned that we all need somebody.

Dad, I learned so much from you. You taught me to be a man.
I will always be grateful for that.

Now, that I look at my own son, and the man that I turned out to be,
I ask myself, would this have been possible if you had not taken
a chance on me?

Happy Father's Day Dad!
