Front Load Washer Odor Problems Often Have Simple Solutions

Fight Mold and Mildew Odors

Drew Taylor
I remember hearing how front load washers are supposed to conserve water and electricity while gently washing laundry. The giant front loader at a nearby laundry mat worked exactly that way and I was excited to get a new washer at home. Over time, the machine began to develop a moldy odor which ultimately transferred to everything washed in it. It was extremely frustrating to use an expensive, new washer and get such disappointing results. Hearing from others and reading reviews online shows many people also experience problems with moldy odors in their washing machines.

A few simple steps helped me resolve this problem. Consider these easy solutions if you are having odor problems with a new front load washer.

Let the Washer Air Out
Front load washers require special care and cleaning. The specifics vary among brands, but it is necessary to towel dry the rubber seal and door after doing laundry. Otherwise, stagnant water can collect, creating odor. Leaving the door open, even slightly, helps the washer air out.

Complete Regular Cleaning Cycles
Front loaders also require a regular cleaning cycle to rinse away any soap residue and buildup. Using too much detergent or non-HE soap can make this problem more severe. Refer to the instruction manual or manufacturer website for detailed information. For my washer, I can run a special cleaning cycle with bleach or an AFFRESH tablet. Bleach is very inexpensive, but the AFFRESH tablets -- which cost approximately a dollar each -- seem to keep the machine fresher longer.

Promptly Remove Finished Laundry
Wet laundry sitting in the washer can also cause odors. Make it a habit to promptly remove clothes from the washer.

Conquer Strong Mold and Mildew Odor Problems
If an odor sets in, it is more difficult to resolve. After two regular cleaning cycles did not do the trick, I referred to the manual. It recommends using three AFFRESH tablets at one time to conquer strong odors. That sounds excessive, but it worked.

If you have problems with your front load washer, refer to the manual and call the manufacturer to help you troubleshoot the issue. They can determine if it is a simple problem or something more important that requires a service call.
