On a recent beach exploration trip, my husband and I traveled down to Melbourne, Florida and took Hwy 192 at exit 180 off of I-95 road straight to the Atlantic Ocean, and turned right on A1A and started looking for food. The first place we spotted was Bikini Beach Sand on the Beach Bar and Grill and when we turned into the parking lot, it was filled with cars. The best method for finding a great restaurant is too find a review and then seek it out, but if you happen to adlib a trip, the full parking lot test often means that the restaurant has regulars that like the place.

Sand on the Beach Bar and Grill Ambiance

It's a bright pink casual outdoor restaurant and bar with a small inner area that can be closed up in bad weather. The last really awful weather, a hurricane, took out the former popular restaurant. The current owner also owns the Dijon's Lobster and Steak house and Tropic Café. Seats are wicker look alike, and most tables seat two or four. I was happy to have my fleece shirt to keep the chill off since I was seated in the breeze. A bridge goes from the restaurant over to the sandy beach complete with volleyball net and crashing waves and you can easily believe that bikini clad people walk up for a snack from Bikini Beach.

Sand on the Beach Bar and Grill Food

Good, very good. I had the turkey bacon sandwich that comes on a crusty, hot roll called a panini. My husband ordered the crab cake sandwich and asked for extra onion. It came exactly as asked for both of us in a timely fashion. His crab cake was larger than the bun and came with a smoky tomato remoulade which we had fun playing guess what the ingredients are in this sauce. My husband raved over finally having flavor in his food.

About Sand on the Beach Bar and Grill Staff

The staff is quite the friendly bunch, complete with tattoos and too many holes punched in their ear lobes and even some too colorful contacts and beach wear if not bikinis. The best part was they talked back. One waitress explained most of the staff had fine dining experience but the times were hard for jobs. When asked about the remoulade, the cook came out and explained almost all of the ingredients but kept the secret of the smoky flavor and a few ingredients to himself, and with reason, the locals all love this pink sauce. Other offerings can get more upscale-surf and turf with steak and crab can run $26, but most sandwiches are about $8-12. Beer and mixed drinks were on offer.

The Frosty Moon Full Moon Party at Sand on the Beach Bar and Grill

Coming the night of November 21, 2010, Sand on the Beach will have Adam Azar of 23 Treez and Jason Noon of Lights Out Project performing together for the first time ever. In honor of the event, they will serve $7 Frostini Martini's (Pinnacle Raspberry), $5 Frost Moon Punch (Mango Banana Passion Fruit Signature Punch) and $5 Zenergy Drink (Green Tea Energy). If you go, you will find parking both sides of the restaurant. If you make a day trip out of your visit, there are several State Parks with bathrooms and parking in order to get that stroll down the beach; if guest leave the premises without taking their vehicle, a sign guarantees they will be towed.

If you intend to partake of intoxicating chemicals, don't drive; use a sober designated driver to get home. Bring your bikini.

This sounds so welcoming right now. I just looked out my window and was greeted with snowflakes. I would love some warm weather, sand and sun. The turkey bacon panini sandwich would be the bonus prize.

A sign of a good eatery when the staff takes time to explain their cuisine.
