Frozen Gold Ice Cream Parlor in New Smyrna Beach Florida: Nostalgic & Quaint

Linda Stamberger
If you live in the New Smyrna Beach area of Volusia County, Florida, and want to experience an old fashioned ice-cream parlor with an exterior that has remained virtually unchanged since the 1970s, then one stop on the popular route to the beach should not be missed. Say you are visiting New Smyrna and want a refreshing summer treat before heading to the hot sand. Then Frozen Gold is the place to get a cool treat for the old-fashioned, road-weary ice cream lover.

Frozen Gold is a New Smyrna Beach landmark, having been on heavily traveled Route-44 since the mid 1970s. The building is distinctly retro, and one of the few remaining original buildings from the era of old Florida, when New Smyrna Beach had more oak and palm trees, and less traffic. One can't find too many original old Florida landmarks these days. Each decade since the twenties there have been land-booms, leaving what was once old Florida and architecturally Americana buildings, demolished, with land turned into corporate stores, supply and demand having voided out all the originality of the unique mom-and-pop type business.

As far as ice-cream eateries are concerned, Frozen Gold's specialty is soft served ice-cream, but the establishment is known as well for the traditional American lunch fare; including hot dogs, sandwiches, colas and more. The service is friendly, and the atmosphere is distinctly old-fashioned. People are often spotted at the outside table sections people watching, licking their dripping vanilla ice-cream cones under a lazy oak tree, shielded from the Florida sun. This is a family-type eatery, with parents and kids dressed in flip-flops, bikini tops and Bermuda shorts, among other casual attire. The atmosphere is distinctly Floridian, as in anything casual goes.

This place is multi-generational, for New Smyrna Beach residents, the rare breed called Florida Crackers, were born and raised in the sunshine state. Many original Floridians have brought their children to Frozen Gold, and the family tradition continues with the grandchildren as well.

Frozen Gold is located next to a popular Harley Davidson dealership, and directly down the road from the famous Pub-44, known throughout the country for its popular biker events, including coleslaw wrestling, to name just one odd-ball biker pastime. During Biker events, starting with Biketoberfest, which is in October and Bike Week, end of February and beginning of March, Frozen Gold is a popular hang-out. Summer is one of the busiest times of the season for ice-cream, regardless of the areas year round sublime weather and specialized events.

Its easy to find Frozen Gold, for they are located directly across Route-44 from Wal-Mart. From I-95, take the New Smyrna Beach exit. From DeLand, head down Route-44 to New Smyrna. From New Smyrna or Edgewater, take Route-44 on route to DeLand.
