Frozen Watermelon Treats: Perfect for Cooling Off This Summer

Sally Albright
Summer brings with it hot temperatures and lots of sun. You can stay cool this summer by using watermelon three different ways. First we will talk about a watermelon slushie, then a watermelon popsicles, and another involving your freezer. These cool watermelon treats are easy to make and can even involve the kids!

To make a watermelon slushie you need just a few ingredients. One cup of watermelon, half a cup of frozen strawberries, 6 ice cubes, half a cup of sugar, and a squirt of lemon juice are all that you need for your slushie. Combine the ingredients in the blender and whirl until smooth but slightly chunky. Serve the slushie in glasses with a spoon. Another variation of this recipe is to replace the lemon juice and frozen strawberries with frozen lemonade concentrate. This delicious slushie recipe will surely help cool you down on a hot summer day.

To make a watermelon popsicle you will need to mix the ingredients together for the watermelon slushie recipe above. After mixing pour the mixture into popsicle molds, ice cube trays, or paper cups. Once the popsicle has been frozen you can enjoy this delicious treat. Ice cube and paper cup popsicles will require sticks which you will poke through plastic wrap (to help keep them in place).

You can add a few extra special touches to your popsicles by mixing in other ingredients. For instance you could place a cube of watermelon into each popsicle mold before adding the slushie mixture. Honeydew melon and cantaloupe would make great substitutes or mix ins for your watermelon popsicle changing up the flavor. You can whirl the slushie mixture until completely smooth or allow the mixture to stay slightly chunky for a change in texture.

One last idea would be to put toothpicks into watermelon cubes and place them on a baking sheet. Throw the baking sheet into the freezer until the watermelon is completely frozen. These watermelon "lollipop" treats are sure to cool the kids down on a hot summer day. Another variation of these watermelon lollipops is to make them into kabobs instead. You can alternate watermelon, cantaloupe, and honey dew melon for a delicious frozen summer time treat.

This summer enjoy the warmth of the sun outdoors but stay cool with these delicious frozen watermelon treats. Of course you could enjoy eating watermelon the old fashioned way, sliced and eaten by hand. A bit of salt lends an interesting flavor to watermelon as well. Enjoy the sun and stay cool!

I was looking for stuff to do with leftover watermelon from my big Sunday Picnic/Pool Party, as I have alot.
This is a really great idea about the slushies.
I did a tad different tho. I froze my watermelon chunks, filled blender about half way, added about 1-2 oz of semi-thawed lemonade concentrate. a heaping tablespoon of splenda (not really needed) 2 sliced bananas and let it whirl! Guess is cross between a slushie & a smoothie, but sure was yum. I then put the leftovers in ice tray and froze to use later..(also would be great with your favorite libation in it..) You could do popsicles for kids too!
