Frugal Date Ideas for any Couple

M. Kaye Hash
So gas prices are not coming down anytime soon, and food prices are right along with it. But what if you still want to spend some quality time with your significant other? Then you need to go on a frugal date.

Often couples find themselves in the rut of "dinner and a movie" dates. Which are probably the worst dates because you spend over half of it staring at a movie screen not talking to each other when you could have saved your money and just watched tv and not had any conversation at home. By trying a frugal date you can try something completely different and you may even find a new connection with your significant other.

The type of couple you are may help you find which frugal date works best for you, or you may be adventurous and try them all!

The Pet Lover Couple

Are you the couple that adores their dogs? Then take them with you on your date! A walk around the dog park or on a walking path not only gives you and your partner some much needed talk time but it also gives your dog a chance to get out too! It is not unlikely that you may not have the extra gas for a trip to the dog park but a walk around your neighborhood will do you, your partner, and your dog a world of good!

The Cultured Couple

Do you tend to watch the history channel more than SpikeTV? Does your music collection consist of a lot of bands the majority of people haven't heard of? Then you may enjoy a date at a museum or concert. Many towns have museums that are free to explore or offer free concerts in the park. You may also enjoy a band at a local café. These places are generally free to attend but offer very high priced food and drinks. To offset these costs keep a cooler in your car or eat before you go.

The Athletic Couple

You may have both been sports stars in high school, or you may just be looking at getting in a better shape, then a frugal date centered on a sports activity may be just the thing for you and your partner. Dust off that old bike or find the tennis rackets and go play a game together. The important thing is to find activities that don't cost much. Sports like golf or softball tend to charge you to play while you can bicycle almost anywhere and most towns have free tennis courts you can play on.

The Family Couple

Children often make it difficult for parents to find time alone and with the high cost of living right now many parents cannot afford gas and a babysitter and the cost of a date. If you have younger kids then save your date until after they go to bed, or if you have older kids send them to the other end of the house. Light some candles and spread a blanket on the living room floor for a romantic picnic that still keeps you close at hand to your kids.

By using a little creativity, and turning off your cell phones, TV's, and computers, and putting up your wallet you can have a frugal date that may just be your best date ever!

It's difficult to find things to do that don't involve driving, but it can be done. But even if you have to drive, a good old-fashioned picnic in the park is the best way to spend a beautiful day. And turning off those damned cell phones is the first rule!
