Frugal Hair Styling

Annie Jean Brewer
One thing that very few of us can escape from is our hair. It goes with us everywhere, making an impression whether we want it to or not by its existence, absence, style or lack thereof.

It is easy to overspend on our hair with the multitude of styles, accessories and products available for it, but by following a few classic routines one can bring this expense thudding down.

Choose a style that is not only classic but versatile and easy to care for. The more maintenance required to maintain your chosen hair style will cost time and money, so choose carefully.

Men can opt for a short cut that is easy to maintain at home with clippers, avoiding the price of barber shops. This look has been around for ages and makes a gentleman look nice and well-groomed with a minimum of expense.

Some men opt to shave their hair entirely, choosing instead to add a quick shave to their routine and thus avoid the concerns of thinning and graying hair. Like Telly Sevalas, Bruce Willis, Patrick Stewart, Chris Gardner and others, men (and some women) end up with a timeless, classy style with no hair at all.

Women that wear their hair short are forced by necessity to make frequent trips to the beauty salon for trims if they want to maintain their chosen style. While some of these shorter styles may seem easy to care for, the time and expense of hair salons alone must be factored in. Unless a lady is able to cut and trim her own hair (or trade the services with a friend), this is not a frugal style.

Growing the hair out will result in a style that is not only classic but can be worn in a variety of ways. One does not have to allow the hair to reach Godiva-like proportions; instead one can choose a shorter style with an eye toward self-maintenance. Here is a tutorial for trimming longer hair at home that I have used personally for years.

After trimming the hair comes the daily styling routine. Avoiding unnecessary colors and procedures will allow your hair to grow healthy and strong while saving money as well. For instance, I do not use items like curling/straightening irons or hair dryers on my hair. This gives me hair that is extremely healthy and strong while saving money on appliances, treatments and electricity.

With longer hair one can wear it up or down with ease. A braid along the front of your face can control bangs as they are growing out; French braids can be used as a basic styling variation as well as clips, combs, sticks and other fun accessories, or you can simply wear it down. Very few things can turn heads as well as a length of healthy hair on a beautiful woman walking down a street, yet it is one of the most-disdained hair styles of the day!

Think twice before going to the hair salon or barbershop and consider adopting a simple, classic style that you can maintain at home. With haircuts costing $20 and up, this can provide a significant savings to the family budget.
