Frugal Tips for Tent Camping

The Basics of Camping on a Budget:Tents And Bedding

Beth Blue
Camping is a wonderful way to spend a family vacation. Even a weekend camp outing can be great fun. Tent camping is a frugal way to go. Here are a few tips for tent camping. Let's focus on tents and bedding. For families, it is important to keep the costs down without scrimping on comfort and adventure.

The tent is the biggest investment you will have. Don't feel like you need to get the biggest, fanciest tent from a specialty store. Target and Walmart have great deals. A tent that has enough room for your family, plus space for some of your supplies is big enough. My favorite tents are the ones that have more than one "room." This will give you a bit more privacy. One part of the tent can be used for sleeping, the other part for supplies or toys for the kids. By all means, set up the tent at least once before going on the camping trip. This will cut down on the frustration at the camp site.

Tarps are extremely useful for tent campers. Placing one under your tent will protect your investment from rips caused by twigs and rocks. An extra tarp can be use to cover supplies from moisture and unexpected rain. With some rope, a tarp can be fashioned into a sun shade, or rain cover. Slip the rope through the grommets on each corner and tie to tree branches. I have seen tarps priced under ten dollars at hardware stores, and discount merchandisers. Some dollar stores even carry them.

Bedding can be a challenge for those of us that are not willing to sleep with a rock under our backs. For adults I recommend an air mattress. An air mattress will ensure you get a good night of sleep at camp. Walmart has inexpensive ones, as do many other stores. Watch for sales throughout the year. I bought a queen sized air mattress for under twenty dollars. For children, a simple inflatable mattress designed for use in a pool will do the job. These can be purchased at a dollar store and most other stores that sell swimming supplies. Don't forget to purchase an air pump that runs on energy from your car or a foot pump. You can tent camp without these items, but they are worth every penny.

Sleeping bags are nice, but who says you can't just bring blankets and comforters from home? If you plan on doing a lot of tent camping, then get the sleeping bags. For those that are new to camping and aren't sure about it, blankets will do. A sheet to cover your air mattress is a comfortable touch. A must for my family is pillows. We each bring our favorite pillow from home.

These tips are for the basic necessities for tent camping on a budget. Go ahead and start planning a camp outing this summer. You and your whole family will have fun without breaking the bank.

I used my tarp to protect my tent too until I tried using it as a tent itself. Check out How to set up an affordable tent using an eight by ten blue tarp. http://www.associatedcontent.comarticle/1686835/blue_tarp_camping_tent.html Comment it and tell me what you think

I'm an avid tent camper. My latest new trick is to rent the camping gear when I'm away from home and find an interesting place to hike into.

We have tent-camped for years, even on our first and 25th anniversary honeymoons. We found that as the size of the family grew from two to five, the size of the tent needed for a camping trip increased also. These are some good basic tips for a beginner. Good job!
