Frugal Ways to Update Your Office Wardrobe

Sophie Spyrou

Office workers need to keep their office wardrobe smart and up to date. But staying kitted out in the latest fashion trends can eat into your budget, as you shop for new outfits. What are some frugal ways to update your wardrobe without going overboard?

Stick with Classic Styles

Classic styles, such as black pencil skirts, white blouses and tailored suits never go out of fashion, so make sure you keep hold of these. Do not throw them away! Search through your wardrobe to see how many classic styles you still have and build your office wardrobe around what you have on hand. If you are missing skirts or blouses, add these to your shopping list.

Visit Secondhand Shops

Buying clothes from secondhand shops no longer carries the same stigma it used to, when shoppers who frequented these shops were branded "cheap" and talked about behind their backs for buying outdated clothes. But times have changed and it is now far more acceptable to be frugal and to shop from secondhand shops for essentials, including office clothes. Look in your local secondhand shop for office clothes that are still in good quality. Some items still have the original tags and have never been worn.

Mend and Make Do

Mending and making do is something your grandmother probably talked to you about as you were growing up, but did you ever pay attention to her wise advice? Replacing buttons, letting out the hem of a skirt or adjusting the size of an outfit when you have gained a few pounds can help you stretch your office wardrobe budget even further. Good quality materials can handle general wear and tear and will hold up even longer if they are mended and adjusted.

Updating your office wardrobe should not fill you with dread, as you struggle to find the money to cover an expensive new wardrobe for work. Start with what you already have on hand in your wardrobe by sticking with classic styles that are tucked away and just adding to staple pieces when the need arises. Secondhand shops can help slash the cost of your office wardrobe budget, as you purchase gently used clothes at a fraction of the cost that you would pay brand new. Another frugal way to update your wardrobe is to mend and make do with what you already have.

Another idea is to mix it up by combining basic pieces in new ways and to jazz up the basics with a scarf or jewelry. I have also known of 20-something females gathering for a clothing swap party at which everyone brings some items to contribute. It sounds like fun. Useful article, Sophie!
