A Three-Day Fruit Fast/Detox

Bethany Pegues
A three-day fruit fast is a great way to detox your body, clear your mind, lose weight, and make your skin glow. When a fruit fast is done gradually, it is quite easy.

What is considered a fruit?

For the purposes of this fruit fast, fruit is defined as anything which contains seed, or anything that is a seed itself. This includes all the fruits we already know, such as peaches, oranges, bananas, apples, cherries, berries, melons, papaya, mango, and plums. We are also including tomatoes, avocados, zucchini, butternut squash, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, olives cucumbers, edamame, and green beans. Pistachios are actually a fruit and a good source of protein. Don't forget about dried fruit. This is not a raw fruit fast, so cooking is encouraged. As olives are a fruit, olive oil may be used for cooking. Salt and seasonings may also be used. Don't forget the fruit juice - fresh or bottled - but do make sure it doesn't contain sugar.

How do I begin a fruit fast?

The ideal way to begin a fruit fast is to gradually change your eating habits in the weeks leading up to the fast. During the first week, just observe what you are eating and try to add as many fruits and vegetables to your diet as possible. Try to make healthier choices. During the second week, eliminate as many processed foods as possible. Think about eliminating flour and sugar. During the third week, cut down on meat, eggs, and dairy, and focus on fresh fruits, vegetables and grains in their whole form, such as oatmeal, barley, spelt, and brown rice.

Begin the three-day fruit fast during week four. There is no limit to the amount you can eat. Have as much as you would like. This is not about calorie-counting. It is about cleansing your body, clearing your mind, and becoming healthier.

If you normally exercise, it is fine to continue to do so during the fruit fast, but you may want to take it a little easier than usual. Activity is good, but over-exertion while doing the fruit fast is probably not a good idea.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water during the fruit fast, as this will help you to detox even more.

How do I end the fruit fast?

After the three-day fruit fast, don't break the fruit fast with a burger and fries. It is best to have a lighter meal and introduce foods back into your diet gradually.
