Fruit Preserves Review: Danish Orchards Strawberry Premium Fruit Preserves

The Taste of was OK, but I Wasn't Too Pleased with the Nutrition Facts or the Ingredients

I haven't been getting jelly for a very long time. I happen to look at the ingredients of whatever jelly I had at the time and was appalled to find that jelly is essentially corn syrup, sugar, food coloring and some artificial flavors. Since then, I have been using alternatives to jelly for anything in place that I normally would have used jelly and I have not missed it. While at my friend's the other day I noticed their jelly, and they told me that it tasted really good. I couldn't help myself and had to look at the ingredients. To be completely fair to the jelly though, I decided to sample it before actually reading the ingredients. A closer look the container revealed that the jelly was not jelly and instead was Danish Orchards Strawberry Premium Fruit Preserves.

In all honestly I actually thought that the jelly tasted good and I wouldn't have thought of corn syrup while I was eating it. The strawberry taste was subtle and the sweetness of the preserves were pretty overwhelming. This gave me some hope that maybe I would actually find that fruit was used in the making of Danish Orchards Strawberry Premium Fruit Preserves, but I also assumed that sugar would be one of the top ingredients. I was very glad to see that strawberries were the very first ingredient listed and I wasn't surprised to see that sugar was the second ingredient listed. The rest of the ingredients that followed were glucose syrup, water, fruit juice, fruit pectin, citric acid, potassium sorbate that is used as a preservative and xanthan gum. Honestly these ingredients were not all that bad, I have seen much, much worse. I was very pleased. With some peanut butter and in between some bread the sweetness that the strawberry preserves had was not as present and the overall taste was better. In addition to looking over the ingredients of the strawberry preserves I looked at the nutrition facts.

I wasn't expecting much with the Danish Orchards Strawberry Premium Fruit Preserves. I really doubted that there would be vitamin C in the preserves and I was certain that the sugars content would be high but I was still very curious about the nutrition facts. In fact I didn't even know what a serving of preserves was. According to the nutrition facts of these strawberry preserves it was only one tablespoon. If I had to guess I would say that there was one to two tablespoons on the sandwich that I had. In that little bit of preserves there was forty calories. The only other nutrition facts that were mentioned were carbohydrates and sugars and they both read nine grams. According to the container this was twenty-five percent less sugars than regular jam. I still thought that there was definitely better ways to get fruit on your toast or peanut butter sandwich. My friend agreed that they though that the strawberry preserves were not very healthy and they weren't too keen on the price. The container held about fifty servings which would have been a little over three cups worth of preserves and my friend said that they paid more than four dollars for it.

After considering the Danish Orchards Strawberry Premium Fruit Preserves was more than a dollar per cup I didn't think that it was something that I would get often unless there was a sale on it. After some further thinking I still wasn't too keen on the ingredients in their entirety or the nutrition, or rather lack of nutrition, that the strawberry preserves offered. Those two things alone would still keep me from getting this item even if it was on sale. I'd say though that if you can find it on sale and you are comfortable with the ingredients and nutrition facts that you should try it out. I like homemade preserves a whole lot better but the taste of the Danish Orchards Strawberry Premium Fruit Preserves isn't bad either.

We used to enjoy Danish Orchards Preserves, but something has happened to make them unappealing in appearance, strange in consistency and artificial tasting. These are not preserves in the normal sense of the term since there is little evidence of whole fruit and the abundance of pectin makes this more like jelly than preserves. Why burn all that oil getting this across the ocean when there are much better, less expensive products made on this side of the Atlantic.
